Everything the tour says, in order. Read it instead of listening if you prefer.

  1. Before you start

Welcome to the Tumon central: beach, shops & hotels audio walk in Tumon. 3 stops: Underwater World Guam, Tumon Bay beach and T Galleria by DFS. Base cluster: the beach, the shopping plazas and most hotels along Pale San Vitores Road; flat and walkable with a hotel to retreat to at midday.

The middle of the Tumon strip: the beach, the plazas and the hotels (approximate box). Underfoot: pavement, sand; slope: flat; shade: low.

Tumon looks like a hotel strip and is one, but it sits on an island with a 3,500-year history, a colonial past, a war and a military present.

Before you start: Cross at signalled crossings: the strip carries fast traffic. Keep phones and cash out of sight on the beach. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.

  2. 1. Underwater World Guam

    Underwater World

    Look for

    • Entrance gallery
    • Walk-through tunnel
    • Touch or feeding area
    • Café or shop
    • Tunnel views
    • Big tanks
    • Reef gallery

Stop 1 of 3: Underwater World Guam. Locally, Underwater World. Arrival point: Walk from any central Tumon hotel; inside Tumon Sands Plaza.

A rainy-day or midday stop: an indoor aquarium with a walk-through tunnel under the bay fish, good for children and heat, about 60–90 minutes; buy tickets on the day unless a package includes them. On a first visit: A rain-day plan rather than a headline sight.

Look for Entrance gallery: Local reef fish and coral. Look for Walk-through tunnel: Fish and rays overhead. Look for Touch or feeding area: Check times; supervised. Look for Café or shop: Souvenirs and drinks. For a photo: Tunnel views, any time. For a photo: Big tanks, mid-morning. For a photo: Reef gallery, quiet hours.

Do not tap the glass or use flash near the animals. Quiet on weekday mornings; tour groups mid-morning; families on wet days. Allowed without flash. The aquarium is inside Tumon Sands Plaza and is air-conditioned.

Walk:Next, stop 2: Tumon Bay beach. It's about 7 minutes on foot, about 300 metres to the north. Route: Walk along the strip to the aquarium. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  3. 2. Tumon Bay beach

    Tumon Bay

    Look for

    • South end near Ypao
    • Middle bay (the hotels)
    • North end towards Gun Beach

Stop 2 of 3: Tumon Bay beach. Locally, Tumon Bay. Arrival point: Walk from the hotel or the strip.

Go in the morning, before 10:00: calm water inside the reef, shade thin after that; swim where a lifeguard or other swimmers are.

Look for South end near Ypao: Calm water and park facilities. Look for Middle bay (the hotels): Clear shallows and the promenade. Look for North end towards Gun Beach: Closer reef for snorkelling; see the Gun Beach page.

Permanent colonisation began in 1668 with the Jesuit priest Diego Luis de San Vitores, who founded a mission; Pale San Vitores Road, the main road through Tumon, carries his name. The Chamorro and Spanish past is easiest to read in Hagåtña, the capital, about 15 kilometres south of Tumon, where the plaza, the cathedral-basilica and the Latte Stone Park sit close together. In Tumon itself the story is thinner, but two things stand out.

Heed the flags; rip currents can form near the reef gaps. Busier from late morning and on holiday weeks for Japanese and Korean visitors. Fine everywhere; ask before photographing other guests.

Walk:Next, stop 3: T Galleria by DFS. It's about 8 minutes on foot, about 150 metres to the south-east. Route: Walk along the strip (AC arcade at the end). The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  4. 3. T Galleria by DFS

    Look for

    • Beauty and fragrance hall
    • Luxury boutiques
    • Local products and souvenirs
    • Café or food outlet
    • Interior atrium
    • Street view of the strip

Stop 3 of 3: T Galleria by DFS. Arrival point: Walk from central Tumon hotels or ride the hotel shuttle.

A big air-conditioned duty-free and luxury mall on the main strip: use it for a heat break, gifts and a rainy hour; nothing here is worth a special trip if the sea is calm. On a first visit: A shopping stop, not a headline sight.

Look for Beauty and fragrance hall: Popular with tour groups. Look for Luxury boutiques: Fashion, watches and jewellery. Look for Local products and souvenirs: Chamorro-made or local goods (check). Look for Café or food outlet: A cool drink and a rest. For a photo: Interior atrium, any time. For a photo: Street view of the strip, evening.

Keep bags in front; shopping crowds can attract thieves. Busiest mid-morning to early afternoon when Asian tour groups arrive; quieter late evening. Allowed in public areas; ask before photographing staff.
