Best places to visit in Uganda: top cities, regions and sights

For a first trip, the best places in Uganda are Bwindi for gorillas (2–3 nights), Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls for savanna (2–3 nights), Kibale for chimps (2 nights), plus Entebbe on arrival and Jinja or Lake Bunyonyi for rest. Order them south-west in one loop and fly back if you have under 10 days.

Nights are a planning guide, not a rule; permit dates decide the rest of the route.

How to order the trip, step by step

Step 1: fix your gorilla permit date first. Everything else — lodges, driver, domestic flight — is built around it, and Bwindi sectors (Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, Nkuringo) are hours apart. Kisoro is the base for Mgahinga and the Nkuringo and Rushaga sectors; Kabale suits the southern sectors and Lake Bunyonyi.

Step 2: choose one savanna park, not both, on a first trip. Queen Elizabeth sits on the same south-west loop as Kibale and Bwindi, so it adds no long transfer. Murchison Falls is a separate northern loop and pairs better with Kidepo or with Jinja on the way back.

Step 3: put chimps before gorillas. Kibale's forest walks are shorter and easier, so you learn how to move quietly in the forest before the longer, steeper Bwindi day.

Step 4: end with rest. Two nights at Lake Bunyonyi or Jinja lets you recover before the flight home, and both are all-year stops.

Step 5: decide road or air. Drives between regions take most of a day (Murchison to Kibale is roughly 7–8 hours), so with under 10 days fly the long hops — Kihihi or Kasese to Entebbe — and drive the short ones.

  • Book the permit, then the lodges, then the vehicle or domestic flight.
  • Keep a spare night before the gorilla trek and before your international flight.
  • Carry a yellow fever certificate; Uganda checks it for everyone.
  • Pack for cold, wet mornings at altitude in Bwindi, Mgahinga and Rwenzori.

Regions and cities that anchor the route

Kampala is the capital on seven hills: markets, the Kasubi Tombs and Namugongo Martyrs' Shrine nearby, plus the worst traffic in the country. Most travellers pass through rather than stay. Entebbe, 40–60 minutes away on Lake Victoria, is where you sleep on arrival and before departure.

The south-west holds the primate circuit: Fort Portal for Kibale, Kabale for Lake Bunyonyi, and Kisoro for Mgahinga. Western Uganda is the umbrella region for all of it. Central Uganda covers Kampala and Entebbe; Eastern Uganda takes in Jinja and the Nile; Northern Uganda is Murchison Falls and Kidepo country.

Notes before you book

Permits and park fees are the fixed costs and they set the calendar; lodge prices swing widely between budget and high-end. Check the current gorilla permit price and availability with a licensed operator, and confirm park entry fees on the official wildlife authority site rather than a reseller.

Distances look short on the map and are not on the road. Murram sections turn slow and slippery in the rains, and night driving outside towns is best avoided. If you are on a tight schedule, price a domestic flight before you commit to a long drive.

Health and safety basics: yellow fever vaccination is required for entry, malaria prophylaxis is worth discussing with a travel clinic, and travel insurance should cover trekking and medical evacuation from remote areas. Check your government's current advisory for the regions you plan to visit, including the border areas.

  • Confirm permit dates before paying for anything else.
  • Budget one full day per long regional transfer.
  • Avoid night driving outside towns.
  • Check advisories for border regions before routing through them.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What are the best places to visit in Uganda?

Bwindi for gorillas, Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls for savanna, Kibale for chimps, and Entebbe on arrival. Add Jinja or Lake Bunyonyi for rest, and Mgahinga or Kidepo if you have extra days. Bwindi is the one place most travellers build the whole trip around.

How many days do you need in Uganda?

Seven days covers Entebbe, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi if you fly one leg. Ten days adds Murchison Falls comfortably. Fourteen days allows Jinja, the full south-west loop and a rest stop at Lake Bunyonyi. Under seven days, pick gorillas plus one park only.

Which areas of Uganda suit a first visit?

The south-west loop: Entebbe, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi, with Lake Bunyonyi or Jinja to finish. It holds the primates and the classic savanna, and the stops sit on one road. Save Kidepo and the Rwenzori trek for a second trip.

Do I need to book gorilla permits in advance?

Yes. Permits are limited per sector per day and peak-season dates sell out months ahead. Book through a licensed operator before flights or lodges, and confirm the current price and your sector, since Bwindi sectors are hours apart.

When is the best time to visit Uganda?

The dry seasons, June to August and December to February, give easier forest trails and roads. Kidepo is best October to March. The rains bring lower lodge prices and greener scenery, but slower driving and muddier trekking.

Is Uganda expensive compared with Rwanda?

Gorilla permits cost roughly half Rwanda's, which is the main saving. Lodges, vehicles and park fees are still the bulk of the budget, and a domestic flight adds cost. Check current permit and park fee prices before you compare quotes.
