Before you start
Welcome to the Innere Stadt (Stephansplatz and Hofburg) audio walk in Vienna. 3 stops: St Stephen’s Cathedral, Hofburg and Sisi Museum and Albertina. Morning cluster: the cathedral on foot from Stephansplatz, then the Hofburg and the Graben; flat, cobbled, crowded after 10:30.
From the Hofburg courtyards east to Stephansplatz; the Ringstrasse is the outer edge. Underfoot: cobbles and paved lanes; slope: flat; shade: medium.
Vienna was the capital of an empire for six centuries, and it still looks and behaves like one: an inner city ringed by a grand boulevard, palaces with names known worldwide, and cafés where a single coffee buys a table for the afternoon.
Before you start: Cathedral: no visits during services; shoulders covered. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.
1. St Stephen’s Cathedral
Stephansdom
Look for
- Nave and main altar
- Side aisles and chapels
- South Tower (Steffl)
Stop 1 of 3: St Stephen’s Cathedral. Locally, Stephansdom. Arrival point: Stephansplatz U-Bahn (U1/U3).
The cathedral in the middle of the old town: go at opening for the nave, and decide about the tower on the day.
Look for Nave and main altar: Gothic vaulting and the pulpit of Anton Pilgram. Look for Side aisles and chapels: Quieter, with tombs and altars. Look for South Tower (Steffl): 343 steps to a view of the city.
Stephansdom, begun in the 12th century and rebuilt in Gothic style, rose as the parish church of a growing city. At the centre is the Innere Stadt, the 1st district, a walkable medieval core with Stephansdom at its middle and the Hofburg at its south-west edge. The oldest is Gothic: Stephansdom, with its steep tiled roof, is the finest example, and its South Tower, about 136 metres tall, is a symbol of the city.
No visits during services; cover shoulders. Tour groups from 10:30; queues for the tower in summer. Allowed in the nave outside services; no flash.
Walk:Next, stop 2: Hofburg and Sisi Museum. It's about 12 minutes on foot, about 550 metres to the south-west. Route: Walk via the Graben to the Hofburg. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
2. Hofburg and Sisi Museum
Hofburg Wien
Look for
- Silver Collection
- Sisi Museum
- Imperial Apartments
Stop 2 of 3: Hofburg and Sisi Museum. Locally, Hofburg Wien. Arrival point: Michaelerplatz (tram, walk from Herrengasse U3).
The imperial palace complex: allow 90 minutes for the apartments and the Sisi Museum; go at opening or after 15:00.
Look for Silver Collection: Court tableware and table settings. Look for Sisi Museum: The life and myth of Empress Elisabeth. Look for Imperial Apartments: Franz Joseph’s working rooms and the empress’s apartments.
The Hofburg, the palace of the court, expanded over 600 years from a medieval fortress into a complex of wings, courtyards and chapels. The Innere Stadt is the morning cluster, with the cathedral, the Graben, the Hofburg and the grand cafés. The Hofburg also gained baroque wings, and the Spanish Riding School’s hall dates from the 18th century.
Bags are checked; large backpacks go in lockers. Tour buses 10:00–14:00. Not allowed in the apartments and the Sisi Museum in some rooms; check signs.
Walk:Next, stop 3: Albertina. It's about 8 minutes on foot, about 250 metres to the south-east. Route: Walk past the Augustinerkirche to the Albertina. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
3. Albertina
Look for
- Habsburg State Rooms
- Permanent collection
- Special exhibition
- Terrace café
- Staircase and State Rooms
- Terrace over Albertinaplatz
Stop 3 of 3: Albertina. Arrival point: Karlsplatz or Stephansplatz U-Bahn, then walk; tram to Oper/Karlsplatz.
A museum in a Habsburg palace with state rooms and an art collection: 90 minutes, a good rainy-day or heat break, and a terrace café outside.
Look for Habsburg State Rooms: Restored 19th-century rooms of the palace. Look for Permanent collection: Impressionists and modern art. Look for Special exhibition: Check what is on. Look for Terrace café: A rest above the square. For a photo: Staircase and State Rooms, any time. For a photo: Terrace over Albertinaplatz, morning.
