Westchester is a suburban county immediately north of the Bronx, about 30–60 minutes from Grand Central on Metro-North. It is not one destination: the Hudson River villages (Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow, Ossining, Croton-on-Hudson) hold the historic estates and the river trail, White Plains is the transport and hotel hub, and Yonkers is the urban southern edge. Sleep in one town and day-trip the rest; a car only pays off for the northern parks and orchards.

Westchester has cities, towns, villages and hamlets that share names and overlap. ZIP codes do not follow municipal lines, so a street address may sit in a different town than its mailing name.
Bee-Line buses are densest in the south and thin to nonexistent in the northeast corner; do not plan a car-free day there.
Amtrak stops at Yonkers, Croton-on-Hudson and New Rochelle but costs far more than Metro-North for the same trip from the city.
