Western Kenya is the green half of the country: Kakamega rainforest, the Lake Victoria shore, tea highlands around Kericho and the Rift Valley escarpment above Eldoret. It is not a safari region and it is not set up for tourism the way the Mara or the coast is, so treat it as a slow add-on of 3–5 nights rather than a highlight. Base in Kisumu for the lake and flights, and take day-trips out by hired car.

Western Kenya is a malaria zone; the risk is real, not theoretical.
Rural roads turn to mud in the long rains (March–May); a 4WD with a driver is the safe choice.
Night driving outside towns is best avoided: unlit roads, pedestrians and livestock.
