Windhoek is a one-night-plus city before a self-drive loop: walk the heritage hill (Christuskirche, Alte Feste, Independence Museum) in the morning, use a taxi for everything else, and be off the streets before dark.
The honest verdict
Windhoek is small, orderly and quiet, and its sights sit on one hill and one mall. The trips that go wrong start at the airport: it is about 45 km from town, so a late landing with no transfer arranged ends in an expensive ride or a hotel near the airport. Walking after dark in the centre is the second problem. Four clusters cover a first visit; Sossusvlei, Swakopmund and Etosha are trips away from the loop, not from this bed.

Three mistakes to avoid
- Street helpers offering to “guard” a car or show a shortcut expect a tip: a small note is normal, more is not.(Scams)

- Cards are accepted in the city; cash for street stalls, tips and the road. The South African rand is often accepted at par, but Namibian dollars are not accepted in South Africa.

- Local SIM at the airport or a mobile shop: Coverage is good in Windhoek and on main roads, and thin in the desert and the far north.

- Greet before you ask a question: a handshake and “good morning” are normal in shops and offices.
- Photos
- Ask before photographing people; do not photograph police, soldiers or parliament security.
- Tipping
- Around 10% in restaurants where not added; a small tip for guides, car guards and hotel porters.

Apr: Green and warm; Easter crowds.
Dry cool season (May–Sep): Clear skies, cold nights and warm days; the easiest months for walking.
