Almost everything a first visit needs sits inside a 2 km box south and west of the Acropolis rock: Plaka and Monastiraki hug the hill, Syntagma and the National Garden are 10–15 minutes east, Koukaki is the quiet sleep base just south. Everything else is a metro or taxi ride.

  • Monastiraki (Μοναστηράκι): Busy square with metro access; pickpockets work the crowds and the metro line to the airport. Suits: Flea market, souvlaki, the Agora.
  • Koukaki (Κουκάκι): Residential streets, neighbourhood tavernas, good value; gentrifying fast since the Acropolis Museum opened. Suits: Quieter base, still a 10–15 min walk to the Acropolis. Price band $$.
  • Syntagma (Σύνταγμα): Metro interchange and the National Garden edge; protests and marches often pass or end here. Suits: Parliament, the Changing of the Guard, transit hub.
  • Psiri (Ψυρρή): Grittier by day, lively by night; safe but keep bags close after dark. Suits: Bars, mezedes, nightlife.
  • Kolonaki (Κολωνάκι): Steep streets below Lycabettus hill; the city's smartest neighbourhood, priced accordingly. Suits: Upmarket shopping, cafés, Lycabettus cable car.
  • Exarchia (Εξάρχεια): Politically charged; generally fine by day, occasional flashpoints around protests — check the news before going at night. Suits: Street art, anarchist-scene cafés.
  • Pangrati (Παγκράτι): Few tourists, good neighbourhood eating; 20–25 min walk to Plaka. Suits: Residential, local tavernas, near the Panathenaic Stadium.
  • Piraeus (Πειραιάς): The port for island ferries, about 30 min by metro from the centre; not a sight in itself for most itineraries. Suits: Ferry departures only.

    Fifteen surviving Corinthian columns of what was once the largest temple in Greece, five minutes from Syntagma. A 20–30 minute stop, easily combined with the National Garden or on the walk between Plaka and Syntagma.

  • Mount LycabettusBook a time

    The highest point in central Athens: a small chapel at the summit and a view over the whole basin to the sea. Walk up (30–45 minutes, steep) or take the cable car; go for sunset.
