About Beaver Falls

Beaver Falls is a small city of about 9,000 people (2010) in western Pennsylvania's North Pittsburgh Region, built on the west bank of the Beaver River. It divides into two parts by terrain: downtown below, and College Hill above, with the Morado neighborhood at the northern edge. Industry thrived here until the mid-to-late 20th century, then fell away; former industrial sites are now vacant or redeveloped. Some residents commute to Pittsburgh, and others work at Geneva College. Surrounding municipalities such as Eastvale, West Mayfield, White Township and Patterson Heights are closely tied to the city and treated as part of it for visitors.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

What is worth your time in Beaver Falls.

  • Geneva College campus — A small Christian college with a 55-acre campus in College Hill, including the older sandstone buildings Old Main and McCartney Library, which are open to the public.
  • McCartney Library — Its collection holds the papers of Clarence McCartney, an early 20th-century Presbyterian minister, and its archives focus largely on the college; anyone may visit, though only those affiliated with the college can borrow books or use computers.
  • Carnegie Public Library — A downtown library counted among the grandest Carnegie libraries in the country, whose ornate design led Andrew Carnegie to require simpler, cheaper buildings afterward; it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Merrick Art Gallery — A National Register-listed gallery in New Brighton, about a mile from the southern end of Beaver Falls.
  • Air Heritage Museum — A museum at the Beaver County Airport, in one of the surrounding communities.

Do

  • Watch Geneva College football games and other sporting matches, the city's most popular activity.
  • Walk or cycle the Beaver River Trail, which follows the river from near the southern end north to the foot of College Hill.
  • Walk across the city and back in a couple of hours, since it is comparatively small.
  • Drive through the early 20th-century residential streets of Patterson Heights, climbing the wooded hillside from downtown.

Customs

  • Residents have a strong sense of local identity and usually know exactly where the municipal borders run.
  • The surrounding municipalities are tightly integrated with the city, in some cases sharing police departments.
  • Each part of the city was settled separately and has its own street system, so numbered streets and avenues do not line up across neighborhoods.
