Almost everything a first visit needs sits inside a compact loop: Belváros and the Parliament on the Pest riverbank, the Jewish Quarter a short walk inland, Castle Hill across the Chain Bridge in Buda. Andrássy Avenue and City Park are a further stretch by metro.

  • Óbuda (District III): Aquincum museum and amphitheatre; quiet, residential, a tram ride north of Castle Hill. Not a base. Suits: Roman ruins for a half day.
