Half a day is enough: see the castle ruins, the old synagogue and the wooden church, then move on to Mogilev or Bobruisk.

Bykhaw is a small town on the Dnieper with a 17th-century castle ruin, a ruined synagogue and a wooden Orthodox church. The sights are close together and can be seen in 2–3 hours. Most travellers use it as a short stop between Mogilev (about 50 km north) and Bobruisk (about 100 km south).

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Reach this subregion only from the EU side — Romania for Moldova — through crossings run by recognised authorities; no route through Ukraine, Belarus or Russia is planned here.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Re-read your government's advice for Moldova (it covers Transnistria) in the week you travel; the situation next door changes fast.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Carry euros in cash for Transnistria and village Moldova; cards stop working at the Dniester.
  • Belarus ↗Check your own government travel advice for Belarus before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
  • Belarus ↗Land crossings from Poland, Lithuania and Latvia open and close on short notice; confirm the crossing on the day with that country's border guard.
  • Belarus ↗Confirm that your travel insurance and medical evacuation cover apply to Belarus before you rely on it.

Watch out

Safety

Bykhaw is quiet and low-crime. The main risks are uneven ground at the ruins and stray dogs. Follow your government's travel advice for Belarus.
  • Castle and synagogue are ruins: uneven ground, no lighting, no facilities.
  • No tourist information office; bring water and snacks.
  • Check local opening hours for the church (may be locked outside service times).
