The places, in the order most people do them
Douala is the practical start: the main international gateway, with markets, public art and the country's strongest food scene. One or two nights is enough to see Bonanjo and the Mboppi market before heading inland.
The West region is the cultural core of a first trip. Dschang has the Musée des Civilisations and a lakeside colonial quarter; Bandjoun has one of the largest chiefdoms, with a decorated meeting house; Foumban is the seat of the Bamoun sultanate, with the palace, royal museum and a crafts street. Give the three 3–4 nights total, with a driver, and treat the chiefdoms as working institutions rather than attractions.
Yaoundé, the capital, sits on hills in the Centre region: the National Museum, the Benedictine museum at Mont Fébé and Mvog-Betsi zoo fill two days. It also links the West to the coast.
Kribi is the coast stop: Lobé Falls drops straight onto the sand, the fish grills run in the evening, and the town works as a base for Ebodjé's turtle beach and Campo Ma'an forest to the south. Two to three nights, more if you want beach time. Lake Ossa is a calm half-day between Douala and Kribi.
Ngaoundéré, on the Adamawa plateau, is reached by night train from Yaoundé and has the Lamido's palace. It is a real option for a second trip; check current advice for Adamawa before committing.
| Place | Region | Nights | Why go |
|---|---|---|---|
| Douala | Littoral | 1–2 | Gateway, markets, street art, food |
| Dschang and Bandjoun | West | 2 | Musée des Civilisations, major chiefdom |
| Foumban | West | 1–2 | Bamoun palace, royal museum, crafts |
| Yaoundé | Centre | 2 | National Museum, Mont Fébé, hills |
| Kribi and Lobé Falls | South | 2–3 | Beach, waterfall onto sand, grilled fish |
| Campo Ma'an and Ebodjé | South | 2 | Forest and turtles with community guides |
| Lake Ossa | Littoral | 0–1 | Lake day between Douala and Kribi |
| Ngaoundéré | Adamawa | 2 | Night train, plateau, Lamido's palace (check advice) |

Notes before you book
Travel by day. Roads between the West, the Centre and the coast are slow, and a 5–6 hour leg such as Foumban–Yaoundé is a full day once you add stops. Keep one buffer day in any plan of a week or more.
The North-West, South-West, Far North and every land border with Nigeria, Chad and the CAR are no-go under current advice. That removes Bafut, Mount Cameroon and the northern parks from a first trip; do not build an itinerary around them.
Chiefdoms and palaces are homes and seats of authority, not museums only. Ask before photographing people, dress modestly, and stay away from funerals and royal ceremonies unless you are invited.
Health and insurance matter more here than in most trips: check your vaccinations and carry cover that includes medical evacuation. See the safety and insurance pages before you fix dates.
- Book buses with a known company or hire a driver for the West region
- Carry cash: card use is limited outside Douala and Yaoundé hotels
- French helps outside the anglophone regions; a few words go a long way

Do I need a visa for Cameroon?
Most visitors need a visa arranged before travel; requirements vary by passport. Check the visa and entry requirements page and apply through the official channel well before your dates.
Is Cameroon safe for tourists?
The regions in this route are generally travelled, but the North-West, South-West, Far North and border zones are not. Travel by day, use known transport, and read the safety page before booking.
