7 days: chiefdoms and the coast

This is the trip to take if you have one week and want the two things Cameroon does best inside the safe zone: the West region chiefdoms and the Kribi coast. Land at Douala, sleep one night near Bonanjo or Bonapriso, then head inland early.

Give Dschang one night for the Musée des Civilisations and the lakeside colonial quarter, then two nights in Foumban for the Bamoun palace, the royal museum and the crafts street. Come back through Douala and take a day bus south to Kribi for three nights: Lobé Falls where the river meets the sea, grilled fish, and beach time in the December–February dry season.

The weak point is the return leg. Foumban to Douala then Douala to Kribi in one day is long; split it with a night in Douala, or hire a driver for the whole West loop so you control the stops.

  • Day 1: arrive Douala, markets and Bonanjo on foot
  • Day 2: Douala → Dschang (driver or bus), museum in the afternoon
  • Day 3: Dschang → Foumban, palace and crafts street
  • Day 4: Foumban, royal museum and market
  • Day 5: Foumban → Douala, overnight
  • Day 6: Douala → Kribi, Lobé Falls
  • Day 7: Kribi beach, fish lunch, return or fly out

10 days and 2 weeks: add the capital, forest and lake

Ten days buys you Yaoundé. The route runs Douala → Dschang → Foumban → Yaoundé → Kribi → Douala, with two nights in the capital for the National Museum, the Benedictine museum at Mont Fébé and Mvog-Betsi zoo. Foumban to Yaoundé is a long day of five to six hours, so leave early and do not plan anything fixed that evening.

Two weeks turns this into the full southern loop: two nights in Douala, two in Dschang and Bandjoun, two in Foumban, two in Yaoundé, two at Campo and Ebodjé for forest and turtles with community guides, three in Kribi, and a last night in Douala before the flight. Lake Ossa fits as a calm half-day between Douala and Kribi if you want a break in the driving.

If plateau interests you more than forest, swap Campo for the night train to Ngaoundéré and give it two nights for the Lamido's palace. Check current advice for Adamawa before you commit, and book the train in advance.

3 weeks: what to add, and what not to

Three weeks lets you slow down rather than cover more ground. The sensible additions are Ngaoundéré by night train, more time on the Kribi and Campo coast, and a second West region chiefdom such as Bandjoun. None of these require crossing into a region under advice against travel.

What not to add: the North-West and South-West regions, the Far North, and any overland crossing to Nigeria, Chad or the CAR. Those are no-go under current advice, and no itinerary on this page routes through them. If a driver or agent offers a shortcut that crosses one, decline it.

Keep one buffer day unbooked on any trip of 10 days or more. Roads, fuel stops and weather eat hours, and a spare day is cheaper than a missed flight.

Practical notes for these routes

Travel by day. Night buses on these corridors are not worth the risk, and the one night journey that makes sense is the train to Ngaoundéré. For the West region, a private driver with a known company is the standard choice; on the Douala–Kribi corridor, day buses run regularly and take three to four hours.

Carry cash. Cards work in parts of Douala and Yaoundé but not on the road, and ATMs thin out west and south. Budget for tipping drivers and guides. Check your visa and yellow fever certificate before booking anything, and confirm the security picture again close to departure, since advice can change.

  • Book the Ngaoundéré train ahead if you are using it
  • Keep passport copies and your yellow fever certificate with you
  • Start drives before 7am on long legs
  • Confirm your route with your hotel the night before

Questions people ask

What is a good 7-day itinerary for Cameroon?

Douala 1 night, Dschang 1, Foumban 2, then Kribi 3. It covers the West region chiefdoms and the south coast without entering any region under advice against travel. Use a driver for the West loop and a day bus for Douala–Kribi.

How many weeks should I spend in Cameroon?

One week covers the West region and Kribi. Two weeks adds Yaoundé, Campo and Ebodjé. Three weeks lets you add Ngaoundéré by night train or slow down on the coast. More time helps because road days are long.

What is the best route through Cameroon?

For a first trip: Douala → Dschang → Foumban → Yaoundé → Kribi → Douala, with Campo and Ebodjé if you have two weeks. It stays in the Littoral, Centre, South and West regions and avoids the North-West, South-West and Far North.

When should I go?

November to February for the southern dry season; December to February is best for Kribi and the coast. The sea is rougher later in the year. Check the best time page before fixing dates.

Do I need a driver or can I use buses?

Both work. A private driver is the usual choice for the West region chiefdoms, where you want stops along the way. Day buses are fine on Douala–Kribi (3–4 h) and other main corridors. Avoid night buses.

Is it safe to follow these itineraries?

These routes stay inside regions the site's country advice allows. The North-West, South-West, Far North and all borders with Nigeria, Chad and the CAR are no-go under current advice. Recheck official advice close to departure.
