  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.
  • Atlantic Canada ↗The Maritimes means Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI only; Newfoundland and Labrador is Atlantic but not Maritime.
  • Atlantic Canada ↗Most sights, ferries and seasonal hotels run late June to early September; outside that, check each opening before booking.
  • Nova Scotia ↗Legal drinking age is 19; ID is checked for anyone who looks under 30.
  • Nova Scotia ↗Alcohol in a vehicle must be unopened or stored in the trunk; public drinking can draw a fine.
  • Nova Scotia ↗Ticks are common in spring; tuck trousers into socks and check after hikes.

The Eastern Shore is Nova Scotia's quiet Atlantic coast: dozens of small fishing harbours, provincial beaches and the Marine Drive between Dartmouth and Canso. It has fewer beds and fewer restaurants than the South Shore, so most travellers sleep in the Halifax Region and drive out. Sleep on the shore only if you want beach mornings, dark skies and a slower pace.

  • Driving Dartmouth to Canso is about 3 hours one way with no fast alternative; do not plan it as a lunch-and-back trip.
  • Cell coverage thins between Sheet Harbour and Canso; download offline maps.
  • Beaches here face open Atlantic swell — swim near others and expect cold water even in August.

Water is warmest August–September; fog is possible year-round and often clears inland. Hurricane-season remnants can bring a wet, windy day in September–October.

July to early September is the reliable window for beaches; the mid-August sandcastle contest is the busiest weekend on Clam Harbour.
