The Halifax Region is one municipality the size of Prince Edward Island, wrapped around a harbour city. Almost everything a short visitor wants — Citadel, waterfront, museums, donair — sits within walking distance of downtown Halifax. The coast and lakes need a car. Sleep in Halifax or Dartmouth, keep the car for one or two coast days, and skip the rest.

Peggy's Cove has no rail or bus service worth planning around; without a car you are limited to a tour or taxi.
The lighthouse rocks are slick and waves sweep people off them every year; the rescue markers are not decoration.
Hurricane season runs roughly August to October; a landfall can close the airport and the bridges for a day.

Halifax and the coast: Fog and drizzle are common in spring and early summer; September and early October are the driest, warmest stretch. Winter brings snow, ice and wind chill.

Summer is short and the coast stays cooler than inland. Book July–September beds weeks ahead; the same months are the only reliable window for the beaches and lakes.
