Fuerte Olimpo
Skip unless you have 3+ days for the Gran Chaco and want a remote riverside fort town: one night is enough, but getting there takes a full day each way.
Fuerte Olimpo is the capital of Alto Paraguay department, a small port town on the Paraguay River with a Spanish fort from 1792 and a cathedral. It sits in the remote northern Chaco, 771 km from Asunción. Most travellers use it as a stop on a longer Chaco circuit or a river trip. The town itself can be seen in a few hours; the journey is the main event.
