Go for one day: Chepachet's mile of antiques and the July 4 parade. Skip as a base unless you camp — you need a car for the lakes and trails.

Glocester is a rural Rhode Island town of about 10,000 people, made up of the villages of Chepachet and Harmony, 25–30 minutes northwest of Providence on Route 44. Its draw is small: a walkable historic main street with antique shops and a country store, plus state-park trails, ponds and campgrounds in the surrounding woods. Almost everything worth doing is a short drive apart, so a car is the practical way in and around.

About Glocester

Glocester is a town of 10,000 people in Providence County, Rhode Island, made up of the villages of Chepachet and Harmony. Route 44 (Putnam Pike) runs through much of the town and leads to the center of Chepachet, the historic village at its heart. From I-95, take 295N to exit 7B onto Route 44W and follow it through Smithfield; the first and only traffic light marks central Chepachet. Continuing west on Route 44 reaches Putnam, Connecticut within 10 miles.

The town is known for its historic village, its 1749 stone town pound, and outdoor recreation in the surrounding protected lands. Driving is the best way to reach trailheads, fishing spots, boat ramps and swimming areas, some of which sit off the main route. Chepachet itself is easy on foot, and can be crossed in under an hour.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Drive. Route 44 (Putnam Pike) runs through the whole town and past Chepachet's only traffic light. Chepachet itself is walkable end to end in under an hour. There is no useful local bus to the lakes, boat ramps or trailheads, and taxis and rideshare are thin outside Providence.

Watch out

Safety

Low crime, rural risk: the real hazards are Route 44 traffic with no shoulder, deer at dusk, ice in winter and thin cell coverage in the northwest woods.
  • No sidewalk or shoulder on much of Route 44: walk facing traffic and wear something visible.
  • Hunting is allowed in season in the George Washington Management Area — wear orange on the trails.
  • Swimming is not recommended at Echo Lake; use Peck Pond in Pulaski Memorial State Park instead.
  • Cell coverage drops in the wooded northwest of town; download offline maps before you drive out.
  • Many shops and restaurants keep short, seasonal hours and close one or two days a week: check before you drive out.
