Smithfield is a suburban town of about 21,000 people in northern Rhode Island, 15–20 minutes by car from Providence. It is a farming and mill town with six historic villages, apple orchards, a town beach on Georgiaville Pond and a 1696 house museum. There is no walkable centre and no rail station, so it works as a half-day or autumn day trip from Providence, not as a place to stay.

About Smithfield, Rhode Island

Smithfield is a town in northern Rhode Island, established in the 1600s as a farming community and named for John Smith, "The Miller", who received land from Roger Williams. Before that, the Wampanoag called the area Wionkhiege and used it for hunting and fishing. It now has the feel of a mid-size suburb while orchards and farms remain scattered through it.

The town is made up of six historic villages: Georgiaville, Mountaindale, Esmond, Greenville, Hanton City and Stillwater. Mill history is part of its identity, and autumn is when it draws visitors, largely for apple orchards and the changing leaves along the wooded back roads. Driving is the practical way to get around; walking is not suggested.

Getting around

A car is the practical way: sights are spread across six villages and there is no walkable centre. RIPTA buses run from Providence (lines 9, 52, 58 and the 90 park-and-ride to Smithfield Commons) at $2 a ride, but they do not link the farms and ponds. Bikes work on the back roads; walking between sights does not. Rent a car in Providence — choice in Smithfield itself is limited.
