HelensburghThe Burgh

Go for one night, not a base: the glow worm tunnel and Symbio zoo fill a day, and Sydney or Wollongong is 45 min away by train.

Helensburgh sits at the southern edge of the Royal National Park, halfway between Sydney and Wollongong, ringed by bushland and the Illawarra escarpment. It is a small town of about 6,400 people with one real draw — the disused railway tunnel where glow worms live — plus a zoo, a Hindu temple and a dam. Most travellers come on a day trip or use it as a quiet one-night stop on the South Coast line.

About Helensburgh

Helensburgh is a far northern suburb of Wollongong, roughly 45 kilometres south of Sydney's central business district. It lies at the southern end of the Royal National Park, halfway between Sydney and Wollongong, with bushland on all sides. Around 6,400 people lived there in 2016, and locals call the town "The Burgh", pronounced "berg".

The town's best-known sight is the disused tunnel at the old Helensburgh station, closed since 1915, where glow worms live. Other draws include a family-owned zoo on the Illawarra escarpment, a Hindu temple whose construction began in 1978, Woronora Dam and Kelly's Falls. Trains on the South Coast line stop at Helensburgh station, about 30 minutes' walk from the main shopping centre.

Rules in force · 7
  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

The town is walkable but hilly — the station to the shops is a steep 30-min walk. Local bus Route 15 links the station to the centre in about 15 min. A car is far easier for the zoo, temple and dam, which sit outside the centre.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are steep, unlit bush tracks, mud in the glow worm tunnel, and summer bushfire closures in the surrounding national park.
  • The station-to-town walk is steep; allow 30–60 min or take bus Route 15.
  • The glow worm tunnel is muddy and unlit — bring waterproof boots and a torch, and keep the light pointed down.
  • Bushfire danger can close Royal National Park and Garawarra tracks; check before you go.
  • Trains on the South Coast line are hourly off peak; miss one and you wait.
