Half-day trip from Dushanbe: fortress, walk the grounds, back by mid-afternoon. Skip the overnight — 3–4 hours covers it.
Hisor sits 15 km west of Dushanbe at 799–824 m, between the Gissar Range to the north and the Babatag and Aktau ranges to the south. It was once an independent khanate and later the winter residence of the governor of East Bukhara. The fortress you see today is a Soviet-era replica of the original, which was destroyed in the 1920s. The town holds about 23,000 people (Wikidata); the wider district counted 308,000 in 2020. Plan 3–4 hours door to door from the capital.

- Central Asia ↗Keep every hotel registration slip or its e-registration record until you leave Uzbekistan and Tajikistan; border officers can ask for proof of where you slept and fine gaps.
- Central Asia ↗Land borders between Central Asian states open and shut with politics and demarcation deals; confirm the exact post is open to foreigners the week you cross.
- Tajikistan ↗Check entry rules on the official e-visa portal only; many nationalities need an e-visa, and the Gorno-Badakhshan (Pamir) region needs an extra permit.
- Tajikistan ↗Carry Tajik somoni in small notes; markets, taxis and tea houses are cash-first, and cards work mainly in hotels and larger shops in Dushanbe.
