IshkashimИшкошим

One night is enough: a Pamir Highway stop for the sunset view and a possible day trip across the Afghan border — not a base.

Ishkashim is a bigger village on the Pamir Highway between Khorog and Langar. It has one main sight — the sunset from the hill behind town — and a border crossing to Afghanistan that some travellers do for a few hours. Most people stay one night as a break on the highway.

  • Central Asia ↗Keep every hotel registration slip or its e-registration record until you leave Uzbekistan and Tajikistan; border officers can ask for proof of where you slept and fine gaps.
  • Central Asia ↗Land borders between Central Asian states open and shut with politics and demarcation deals; confirm the exact post is open to foreigners the week you cross.
  • Tajikistan ↗Check entry rules on the official e-visa portal only; many nationalities need an e-visa, and the Gorno-Badakhshan (Pamir) region needs an extra permit.
  • Tajikistan ↗Carry Tajik somoni in small notes; markets, taxis and tea houses are cash-first, and cards work mainly in hotels and larger shops in Dushanbe.
  • Tajikistan ↗Land borders, including those with Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, have been closed or restricted at times: confirm the current status before you plan an overland leg.

Watch out

Safety

Ishkashim itself is safe for tourists. The main risk is the border crossing to Afghanistan: check your government's travel advice and the local security situation before you go.
  • The border to Afghanistan: check your government's travel advice before crossing; you need a valid Afghan visa and a Tajik double-entry visa or a second single-entry eVisa.
  • The restaurant (Қаҳвахонаи Сарез) may close early; eat before 19:00.
  • Power cuts are common; bring a torch and a power bank.
