The honest verdict
Lagos is huge, loud and slow to cross. The trips that go wrong are the ones that treat it like a walkable city: an unbooked taxi from the airport, a cross-town run at rush hour that takes three hours, and a phone in hand on Lagos Island. Four clusters, each reached by a pre-arranged car and visited on its own, make a first visit workable. Your government may advise against parts of Nigeria: read its advice and keep to the areas and routes it allows.

Three mistakes to avoid
- Unbooked airport taxis: drivers who offer a ride before you reach the hotel car quote a fixed price and change it, or take you elsewhere. Wait for your named driver.(Scams)

- Naira cash for markets, bukas and small tips; cards work at hotels, malls and larger restaurants but terminals go offline. Bank transfers are the local habit, and some sellers ask for them: do not hand your phone to anyone.

- Keep ₦20,000 in small notes for tips and small purchases; withdraw at ATMs inside banks, hotels or malls in daylight and check exchange rates, which have moved sharply.
