Skip unless you have 2–3 extra days and a high tolerance for rough roads. One night is enough to see the old palace and trek back to Hsipaw.

Namshan is a sleepy village in northern Shan State, once the capital of the Tawngpeng kingdom. The only reason to go is the trekking: a 2–3 day walk through Palaung villages and hills back to Hsipaw. The road is terrible, the lodging is basic, and there is no phone or internet. Plan for one night and a guided trek.

  • Southeast Asia ↗Drug trafficking can carry the death penalty in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Brunei and Myanmar; never carry a bag or parcel for anyone.
  • Southeast Asia ↗Carry a passport valid for at least six months from entry with two blank pages; airlines refuse boarding on less.
