Padang Besar
Half a day covers Padang Besar: shop the duty-free market, clear the border. Add Gua Kelam only if you have a car.
Padang Besar is a small border town in Perlis and the only direct rail link between Malaysia and Thailand. The Malaysian side is quieter than the Thai town across the line, and most visitors come for duty-free shopping on goods brought in from Thailand. Sights are limited to the market and the border itself, so a few hours to one day is enough.

Safety
- No ATM or official currency exchange at the station — change enough ringgit for your onward ticket before you arrive.
- Malaysian time is one hour ahead of Thai time; check whether a departure time is Malaysian or Thai, and note phones may not switch over.
- The Malaysian and Thai checkpoints are several hundred metres apart, with duty-free shops in between; most people take a motorbike taxi (RM3) rather than walk.
