Portishead
Give Portishead one night, not a base: marina, Lake Grounds and Battery Point in half a day, then move on. No train station, so come by bus or bike.
Portishead is a small coastal town on the Bristol Channel, about 35 minutes by bus from Bristol and with no railway station of its own. Its draw is the marina, the open-air pool, the Lake Grounds and the flat cycle path along the Avon. Most travellers see it in half a day or use it as a quiet, cheaper bed for Bristol.

About Portishead
Portishead is a coastal town in Somerset with a population of about 25,000 (2018), sitting just south of the mouth of the river Avon in the Bristol Channel and west of the Royal Portbury Dock, a container terminal. It began as a fishing port, expanded rapidly in the 19th century around the chemical industry, and is now a residential resort town. Housing has grown quickly to meet demand from nearby Bristol, even though no direct rail link connects the two cities.
The town's industrial past is largely gone. The deep water dock became a marina with 250 pontoons, and the sites of the phosphate works and power station were cleaned up and redeveloped with low-rise flats. The sea wall and the Ashlands screen most of the container port and its car storage lots. The marina and pier are what remain of the old port.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
- Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
- Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
- United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
- United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
- United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

What is worth your time in Portishead.
- Portishead Marina — A marina of 250 pontoons in the reworked dock of a coal terminal, now ringed by low-rise housing.
- Portbury Ashlands — A nature reserve on flattened coal ash, managed by the Avon Wildlife Trust and home to water birds, otters and grass snakes.
- Portishead Point lighthouse — A 9-m black pyramid on a concrete base, designed by the Chance Brothers and built in 1931.
- Battery Point — Grassland on a limestone ridge that held a coastal gun battery in the Second World War, with fossils, folds and faults of geological interest.
- Gordano Valley — A 161-ha National Nature Reserve on reclaimed land, with over 130 species of flowering plants including 3 wild orchids.
Do
- Walk the Lake Grounds, Battery Point hill and the marina, which are free of motorised traffic.
- Cycle the Avon Gorge route 41 from Bristol, mostly flat but gravel, then switch to route 26.
- Ride from Clevedon on a nearly car-free route through the Gordano Valley in about 1 hour.
- Look for fossils at Black Nore, a stretch of the pier made of alluvial sandstone.
Customs
- The town's fishing and industrial heritage has largely disappeared through gentrification and redevelopment.
- The town is reached by bus line X3 from Bristol in about 35 minutes, as it has no railway station since the last one closed in 1964.
