Santo António

Base yourself here for 2–3 nights to explore Príncipe's beaches, forest and turtle beaches; the town itself is a 30-minute walk end to end.

Santo António is the only town on Príncipe, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve island. The settlement is small — about 1,300 people — and most visitors use it as a base for the island's wild beaches, cocoa plantations and forest trails. Two nights let you see the main sights; three if you want a boat trip to Ilhéu Bombom or a day hiking in the Obo Natural Park.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • African islands ↗Sleep on the island you fly home from the night before your long-haul departure; inter-island flights and ferries in this region are cancelled or rescheduled often enough to break a same-day connection.
  • African islands ↗In the Indian Ocean islands book flexible rates for December to March: a cyclone warning can shut airports, ferries and roads for two or three days.
  • São Tomé and Príncipe ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport on the official e-visa portal (smf.st/evisa) or with the embassy; many nationalities have 15 visa-free days, and an entry fee is charged on arrival (check).
  • São Tomé and Príncipe ↗Book a travel-clinic visit several weeks ahead; ask about malaria prevention and check the yellow fever vaccination certificate requirement for entry.
  • São Tomé and Príncipe ↗Inter-island flights are small and infrequent; book them before other nights and allow a buffer day before your international flight.
  • São Tomé and Príncipe ↗Bring euros in cash for the whole stay: foreign cards work at very few hotels and ATMs rarely accept them.

Safety

Santo António is safe; the main risks are poor road conditions, limited medical care and the lack of an ATM. Bring cash and travel insurance.
  • No ATM on Príncipe: bring enough euros or dobras from São Tomé.
  • The island has limited medical facilities; serious cases fly to São Tomé.
  • STP Airways is on the EU air-safety blacklist (check current status before booking).
