Schengen

Visit Schengen as a half-day stop from Remich or Mondorf-les-Bains: see the European Museum, the monument and the Moselle, then move on. Not a base.

Schengen is a small Moselle village of about 3,400 people, known as the birthplace of the Schengen Agreement (signed in 1985). Its sights — the European Museum, the monument, a piece of the Berlin Wall and the castle — take about two hours to see. There are no hotels in the village itself, so most visitors stay in nearby Remich, Mondorf-les-Bains or across the river in Perl, Germany. The village is best combined with a wine-tasting or boat trip along the Moselle.

Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Benelux ↗Dutch and Belgian police can ask anyone to show identification (in the Netherlands from age 14): carry the original passport or EU ID card — a photocopy is not accepted.
  • Benelux ↗Tap-in fares, Dutch and Belgian domestic tickets and Luxembourg's free transport all stop at the border: buy an international ticket for cross-border legs, or you will be fined on board.
  • Luxembourg ↗Luxembourg is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Luxembourg sources for your passport.
  • Luxembourg ↗Public transport inside Luxembourg is free in second class; cross-border trips and first class still need tickets.
  • Luxembourg ↗Luxembourgish, French and German are official; English is widely understood in the capital.

Entry rules depend on your passport. Full visa guide

Watch out

Safety

Schengen is a quiet, safe village. The main risks are the river (no lifeguards) and the summer heat; keep an eye on children near the water.
  • No hotels in Schengen itself: book in Perl, Remich or Mondorf-les-Bains.
  • The European Museum closes at 17:00 between 2 November and Easter (check exact dates).
  • The Schengen Agreement area is separate from the village: for visa questions, see the Luxembourg visa page.
