Sidikalang
Half a day, not a night: coffee and durian on the Aceh–Lake Toba land route. Sleep here only if the minivan to Sibolga is your next leg.
Sidikalang is the capital of Dairi Regency in North Sumatra, on the road between the Aceh west coast and Lake Toba. It is known for robusta coffee (kopi sidikalang), durian sold from trucks on the main street in season, and patchouli oil. Sights are thin and hotels are basic, so most travellers stop for a meal and a coffee rather than a night.

- Durian trucks sell on the main street in season; the fruit here tastes stronger than elsewhere.
- No airport: the nearest major city is Medan, a long road transfer away.
