Sierra Leone
Best places to visit in Sierra Leone: top cities, regions and sights
For a first trip, base 2–3 nights in Freetown, then add the peninsula beaches (River No. 2, Tokeh, Bureh) and 2 nights on the Banana Islands; go east to Tiwai or Gola only if you have 10+ days. All of it works in the dry season, November to April.

Summary: who it suits, when to go, what it costs
Sierra Leone rewards a slow trip. Distances on the map are short, but road conditions and the estuary crossing at Lungi eat hours, so the practical rule is fewer places, more nights. The table below sets out the main options by traveller type, season and rough cost.
| Traveller | Best pick | Nights | When | Cost signal (2026 estimate) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First visit, 7 days | Freetown + River No. 2 + Banana Islands | 2 + 2 + 2 | Nov–Apr | Mid-range lodges and car hire are the main spend |
| Beach-focused | Peninsula: River No. 2, Tokeh, Bureh | 4–5 | Nov–Apr | Beach lodges price by room, not per person |
| Wildlife and forest | Tiwai Island + Gola Rainforest | 4 | Dec–Apr | Guide and permit fees on top of transport |
| History-focused | Freetown old centre + Bunce Island | 3 | Nov–Apr | Bunce Island needs a chartered boat |
| Long trip, 14 days | Coast, Tiwai, Gola, then Monrovia | 13 | Dec–Apr | Liberia visa and a second border crossing |
The places, in the order most trips run them
Start in Freetown. The National Museum, St George's Cathedral and the Old Fourah Bay College ruins sit close together in the old centre, and Lumley Beach is the evening wind-down. Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary in the hills above the city is a half-day. Note that the Cotton Tree, long the city's symbol, fell in 2023.
Then the peninsula. River No. 2 and Tokeh are the classic beach stays, with Bureh Beach further round for surf and a community lodge. Stay over rather than day-trip: the road back to Freetown is slow and you lose the best light.
Add the Banana Islands for two nights off Kent if you want snorkelling and a quieter base. From there, the eastern run is Tiwai Island on the Moa River for primates and pygmy hippos, and Gola Rainforest for birding. Both need a car and driver and advance booking for guides; Tiwai is 6–8 hours each way from Freetown.
For a longer trip, Mount Bintumani in the Loma Mountains is West Africa's high trek, 3–4 days, December to March. Bunce Island, the slave-trade fort ruins in the Sierra Leone River, is a day trip by chartered boat with a historian guide. Bo, Kenema, Makeni and Bonthe work as stops on the way to these rather than destinations in themselves.
- Freetown — 2–3 nights, history plus Tacugama
- River No. 2 and Tokeh — 2 nights, peninsula beaches
- Bureh Beach — 1–2 nights, surf and community lodge
- Banana Islands — 2 nights, island lodges and snorkelling
- Tiwai Island — 2 nights, primates and pygmy hippos
- Gola Rainforest — 2 nights, birding and forest walks
- Bunce Island — day trip, fort ruins
- Mount Bintumani — 3–4 nights, high trek, Dec–Mar
Notes before you commit
Everything above assumes the dry season. In the rains, from roughly May to October, peninsula roads and the eastern tracks become unreliable and some lodges close; treat wet-season plans as check-first. Tiwai and Gola are best December to April.
Sort the paperwork before anything else: the e-visa or visa on arrival, a yellow-fever vaccination card, and a plan for the Lungi crossing, which is by ferry, water taxi or road around the estuary. Build a buffer day before your flight home. Travel insurance that covers medical evacuation is worth having here, and confirm it covers the activities you plan.
Costs are hard to pin down because so much is quoted per vehicle or per guide rather than per person. Budget for a car and driver on any eastern leg, and carry cash: card acceptance outside Freetown hotels is limited (check).
Questions people ask
What are the best places to visit in Sierra Leone?
Freetown for history and the chimp sanctuary; River No. 2, Tokeh and Bureh on the peninsula; the Banana Islands for two nights; Tiwai Island and Gola Rainforest for wildlife. Bunce Island and Mount Bintumani suit longer or more active trips.
How many days do you need in Sierra Leone?
Seven days covers Freetown plus peninsula beaches and the Banana Islands. Ten days adds Tiwai or Gola. Fourteen days allows the coast, rainforest and a crossing to Monrovia. Add a buffer day before your flight for the Lungi crossing.
Which areas of Sierra Leone suit a first visit?
Freetown and the peninsula. They are close together, have the widest choice of places to stay, and need no long drives. Save Tiwai, Gola and Mount Bintumani for a second trip or a 10-day-plus itinerary.
When is the best time to visit?
November to April, the dry season. Tiwai and Gola are best December to April, and Mount Bintumani December to March. The rains from around May to October make peninsula and eastern roads unreliable and close some lodges.
Do I need a visa for Sierra Leone?
Many nationalities can use an e-visa or visa on arrival, but rules change and fees differ by passport. Check the current requirement and apply before booking flights. A yellow-fever vaccination card is normally asked for on arrival.
How do I get between these places?
By car with a driver for anything east of Freetown; Tiwai is 6–8 hours each way. Peninsula beaches are short hops from Freetown. The Banana Islands need a boat from the Kent area, and Bunce Island needs a chartered boat.
