Summary by length, month and cost
Pick your length first, then check the month: outside Nov–Apr, peninsula roads and island boats get unreliable and Tiwai access can close. Costs below are 2026 estimates for one person per day, mid-range, excluding international flights.
| Length | Route | Nights | Best months | Daily cost (2026 est.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 days | Freetown → River No. 2 → Banana Islands → Freetown | 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 | Nov–Apr | USD 90–160 |
| 10 days | Freetown → Bureh → Banana Islands → Tiwai → Freetown | 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 | Dec–Apr | USD 90–170 |
| 14 days | Freetown → peninsula → Tiwai → Gola → Monrovia | 3 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 3 | Dec–Apr | USD 100–180 |
| 21 days | 14-day route plus Makeni and Outamba-Kilimi or Loma Mountains | as 14 days plus 5–7 | Dec–Mar | USD 90–170 |
Costs are 2026 estimates; island and forest lodges charge per person and often per meal. Check current rates.
Step by step: 7 days
Day 1–2, Freetown. Land at Lungi, cross the estuary, and use the first day for the old centre on foot: the National Museum, St George's Cathedral and the Fourah Bay ruins. Note the Cotton Tree, the city's symbol, fell in 2023. Day 2 afternoon, Lumley Beach or a half-day at Tacugama chimp sanctuary in the hills.
Day 3–4, River No. 2 or Tokeh. Roughly 1–1.5 h by road from Freetown on the peninsula, longer in rain. Stay over rather than day-trip; the road is slow and the point of the peninsula is the evening and morning light.
Day 5–6, Banana Islands. Boat from Kent or Dublin, weather dependent; arrange the crossing with your lodge in advance. Snorkelling, walking and little else — that is the appeal.
Day 7, back to Freetown for one night, then the Lungi crossing. Do not schedule the island-to-airport run on the same day.
- Book Tacugama and the Banana Islands boat before you fly.
- Keep day 7 free of anything that can run late.
- Carry cash for lodge bills; card acceptance is patchy.
Step by step: 10 and 14 days
The 10-day version swaps a Freetown night for Bureh Beach (surf and a community lodge, 1–2 nights) and adds Tiwai Island, 2 nights, reached by car with a driver in 6–8 h each way. Tiwai guides should be booked ahead; night walks are when you see pottos and galagos.
The 14-day version keeps Freetown at 3 nights, then peninsula, Banana Islands, Tiwai and Gola Rainforest at 2 nights each, finishing with 3 nights in Monrovia. That means a Liberia visa arranged in advance and a daytime crossing at the Mano River bridge. If the Liberia paperwork is not ready, replace Monrovia with 3 more nights split between Gola and Freetown.
| Stop | Nights | Getting there |
|---|---|---|
| Freetown | 2–3 | Lungi airport crossing |
| River No. 2 / Tokeh | 2 | 1–1.5 h by road from Freetown |
| Bureh Beach | 1–2 | Peninsula road, slow in rain |
| Banana Islands | 2 | Boat from Kent or Dublin |
| Tiwai Island | 2 | Car with driver, 6–8 h each way |
| Gola Rainforest | 2 | Road via Kenema |
| Monrovia | 3 | Mano River bridge crossing by day |
Step by step: 3 weeks
Three weeks lets you add the north or the high country without cutting the coast short. One shape: the 14-day route, then back from Monrovia or Freetown to Makeni for Outamba-Kilimi National Park, or to the Loma Mountains for the Mount Bintumani trek (3–4 nights, Dec–Mar only).
Both add-ons need a vehicle and a guide arranged in advance, and both are seasonal. Treat the extra week as the flexible part of the trip and confirm access locally before committing.
- Outamba-Kilimi: wildlife and river country north of Makeni.
- Mount Bintumani: West Africa's high trek, 3–4 nights, Dec–Mar.
- Keep 2 spare days somewhere; road delays are normal.
Notes
Sort the e-visa or visa on arrival and the yellow-fever certificate before anything else — they gate the whole plan. The Lungi crossing (sea coach, ferry or road) is the single most common thing travellers get wrong; always keep a buffer day before an international flight.
Cash matters. Carry new, clean leone notes and some US dollars for lodges, and do not rely on ATMs outside Freetown. Agree driver and boat prices before you set off. Roads are slow, so plan fewer stops than you would in Europe or the US.
This is a dry-season plan. In the rains, peninsula roads and island boats become unreliable and forest access can close, so shorten the route and stay closer to Freetown.
FAQ
Questions people ask
What is a good 7-day itinerary for Sierra Leone?
Freetown 2 nights, River No. 2 or Tokeh 2 nights, Banana Islands 2 nights, then 1 night back in Freetown before your flight. Add Tacugama as a half-day from Freetown. Keep the last day free for the Lungi crossing.
How many weeks should I spend in Sierra Leone?
One week covers Freetown and the peninsula beaches. Two weeks adds Tiwai Island and Gola Rainforest, or a crossing to Liberia. Three weeks lets you add Outamba-Kilimi or the Mount Bintumani trek in the north.
What is the best route through Sierra Leone?
Start and end in Freetown, because the airport is at Lungi across the estuary. Go west to the peninsula beaches, then out to the Banana Islands, then east to Tiwai and Gola. Loop back to Freetown rather than crossing the country twice.
When should I go?
November to April, the dry season. Tiwai and Gola are best December to April, and the Mount Bintumani trek runs December to March. In the rains, peninsula roads and island boats are unreliable.
How do I get between stops?
Hire a car with a driver for anything beyond the peninsula; Freetown to Tiwai is 6–8 h each way. Banana Islands need a boat from Kent or Dublin, arranged with your lodge. Agree prices before departure.
Do I need a buffer day before my flight?
Yes. The Lungi crossing by sea coach, ferry or road can take hours and is weather dependent. Sleep in Freetown the night before an international departure rather than on the peninsula or an island.
