- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.
- Atlantic Canada ↗The Maritimes means Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI only; Newfoundland and Labrador is Atlantic but not Maritime.
- Atlantic Canada ↗Most sights, ferries and seasonal hotels run late June to early September; outside that, check each opening before booking.
- Nova Scotia ↗Legal drinking age is 19; ID is checked for anyone who looks under 30.
- Nova Scotia ↗Alcohol in a vehicle must be unopened or stored in the trunk; public drinking can draw a fine.
- Nova Scotia ↗Ticks are common in spring; tuck trousers into socks and check after hikes.
The South Shore is a 200 km strip of fishing towns and beaches southwest of Halifax, strung along Highway 103 and the slower Lighthouse Route (Trunk 3). There is almost no public transit between the towns, so a car decides what you see. Sleep in Lunenburg for the UNESCO old town and Bluenose II, in Chester for a quieter base close to Halifax, or in Liverpool or Shelburne if you are pushing toward Yarmouth. Two nights covers Lunenburg, Mahone Bay, Peggy's Cove and one beach day; three lets you add Kejimkujik or Shelburne without rushing.

- Distances look short on the map but Trunk 3 is slow through every town; use Highway 103 to move, Trunk 3 to sightsee.
- Summer weekends (July–August) fill Lunenburg and Chester beds; book weeks ahead.
- Cell coverage is patchy on stretches of the coast and inland toward Kejimkujik.

- Maritime climate: fog and sea breeze keep summer cooler than inland; June–September is the reliable window. Hurricanes and tropical storms can brush the coast in late summer and autumn.
July and August are warmest and busiest; late September still works with fewer crowds and cooler water.
