Stanley is a one-street harbour town of about 2,500 people: two nights are enough for the town, and the real plan is which day trip and which outer-island flight you can get in the weather.
The honest verdict
Stanley fits in a day on foot, so the trips that go wrong are about access, not sights: a 55 km road transfer from Mount Pleasant that has to be booked, a small-plane seat to the outer islands that depends on wind, and a Volunteer Point 4x4 day that the tour operator decides on the morning. Four small areas cover the town; keep one bed and treat everything else as a day trip from it.

Three mistakes to avoid
- There is almost no tourist crime: the usual problem is unclear pricing. Fix the price of a taxi or tour before you go.(Scams)
- Keep a few metres from penguins and seals; never block their path to the sea.(Survive · red lines)

Etiquette: the top three
- Greeting
- Say hello to people you pass in the street: Stanley is small and everyone greets. A wave to a passing driver is normal.
- Sovereignty and 1982
- Islanders are proud and sensitive about the war and their right to choose. Do not raise the Malvinas dispute or joke about it; listen if someone talks about it.
- Wildlife
- Stay at least 6 m (20 ft) from penguins and give seals and sea lions more space; never block their path to the sea, and never use drones near wildlife.
The best time to go
Jan: Southern summer: long days, penguin chicks and seabirds; book lodges early.
Summer (Nov–Mar): Penguin chicks, long light and the full choice of tours and lodges.
