  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Reach this subregion only from the EU side — Romania for Moldova — through crossings run by recognised authorities; no route through Ukraine, Belarus or Russia is planned here.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Re-read your government's advice for Moldova (it covers Transnistria) in the week you travel; the situation next door changes fast.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Carry euros in cash for Transnistria and village Moldova; cards stop working at the Dniester.

Transnistria is a breakaway region on the east bank of the Dniester. It is internationally recognised as part of Moldova but run by its own de facto authorities, with separate checkpoints, currency and mobile network. Consular help is very limited and several governments advise against all but essential travel. Plan it from Chișinău, keep it short and do not rely on cards or roaming.

About Transnistria

A strip of land mostly east of the Dniester that broke away from Moldova as the Soviet Union collapsed. After a short war in 1992, a ceasefire froze the conflict with Russian troops and a joint peacekeeping force in place. The region runs its own government, army, currency, passports and border posts, but is recognised by no UN member. Its economy leans on steel, textiles, electricity and the Sheriff conglomerate, and was hit hard when Russian gas stopped in January 2025.

2026 rules — confirm on the official portal

Transnistria has no border that the rest of the world recognises, but its authorities run checkpoints on the line with Moldova. Enter Moldova first through a Moldovan-controlled crossing (Chișinău airport or the Romanian border) under Moldova's visa rules, then cross to Transnistria by road. At the Transnistrian checkpoint foreigners get a migration card (in practice free, issued on a scan of the passport) valid for the stay you declare, up to 45 days; extensions are possible at the Tiraspol migration office. Keep the card and hand it back when you leave — check the current procedure before you go.

  • Read your own government's travel advice for Moldova (which covers Transnistria) before booking; several governments advise against all but essential travel to the region.
  • Enter Moldova through a Moldovan-controlled crossing first (for example Chișinău airport); at the Transnistrian checkpoint you receive a local migration document that sets how long you may stay. Keep it until you leave.
  • Most embassies cannot provide normal consular help inside Transnistria; confirm your insurance covers the region.

Etiquette

  • Keep political opinions to yourself; do not argue about status or the conflict.
  • Russian is the most widely used language; a few words help.

Deep dive

This deep dive explains how a narrow strip of land on the Dniester became a state that no one recognises but everyone deals with. Transnistria keeps Lenin statues, Soviet-style holidays and its own money, but its exports go to the EU, its football club has played in the Champions League, and its future depends on decisions in Chișinău, Kyiv and Moscow. It is background reading, not a travel plan; see the Transnistria page for practical advice.

1Origins: the left bank1 min

The land east of the Dniester was never part of historic Moldavia. It belonged to the Ottoman frontier, then the Russian Empire from 1792, when Tiraspol was founded as a fortress town under General Suvorov, whose statue still stands in the centre. Bender, on the right bank, grew around an Ottoman fortress and saw Sweden's Charles XII camp there after Poltava.

In 1924 the Soviets created a Moldavian Autonomous Republic inside Soviet Ukraine on the left bank, partly as a claim on Romanian-ruled Bessarabia. When the Moldavian SSR was formed in 1940, most of the left bank was attached to it. Industry, Russian-speaking managers and the army settled there after the war, and the area became the most industrial and Russified part of the republic.

The population ended up in roughly equal thirds of Moldovans, Ukrainians and Russians, with Russian as the common language. That mix, and a distinct Soviet history, underpinned the later split.

2Breakaway and the 1992 war1 min

In 1989 Moldova made Romanian in Latin script the state language, and talk of union with Romania grew. Local elites on the left bank, backed by factory councils and parts of the Soviet army, declared a Pridnestrovian Moldavian Soviet Republic in September 1990.

Fighting escalated in spring 1992 and peaked in Bender in June, when the Russian 14th Army intervened on the separatist side. Several hundred people were killed. A ceasefire signed in July 1992 created a security zone patrolled by joint Russian, Moldovan and Transnistrian peacekeepers, which still exists.

Russian troops stayed, officially to guard the Cobasna ammunition depot, one of the largest in Europe. Negotiations in the '5+2' format (with the OSCE, Russia, Ukraine, the EU and the US) produced proposals but no settlement.

3A state without recognition1 min

Transnistria has a president, parliament, army, police, customs, passports and a flag with the hammer and sickle, the only one still used by any government. It is recognised only by other unrecognised or partly recognised entities such as Abkhazia and South Ossetia; Russia has not formally recognised it.

The Transnistrian ruble has been the currency since 1994, issued with plastic coins from 2014. Most residents hold another passport — Moldovan, Russian or Ukrainian — because the local one is useless abroad. The region celebrates 2 September, 9 May and even the October Revolution.

For visitors this produces the sense of a Soviet theme park: Lenin before the House of Soviets, a T-34 tank by the eternal flame, and neat avenues with red flags. It is also a real place with checkpoints, conscription and a security service, which is why advisories apply.

4Sheriff, steel and brandy1 min

Much of the economy belongs to one company. Sheriff, founded in the 1990s by former security officers, runs supermarkets, petrol stations, the mobile network, TV, a bank and FC Sheriff Tiraspol, whose stadium complex is the largest in the region. The club reached the Champions League group stage in 2021 and beat Real Madrid in Madrid.

The Moldovan Steel Works in Rîbnița, textile factories and the Kuchurgan power station were the other pillars. The Kvint distillery, founded in 1897, makes the region's famous brandy.

Since 2006 Transnistrian firms export through Moldovan customs, which gives them access to the EU under Moldova's trade agreement; most exports now go west, not east. That, and dependence on Moldova for energy since 2025, ties the region to Chișinău more than its symbols suggest.

5Daily life and faith1 min

Life in Tiraspol looks orderly and quiet: clean parks, cheap public transport, Soviet-era apartment blocks and a river embankment where families walk in the evening. Wages are low, many young people leave for Moldova, Russia or the EU, and pensions often come subsidised from Moscow.

Orthodoxy has revived since 1990. The Noul Neamț (Kitskany) monastery, founded in 1864 by monks from Romania, has a bell tower with wide views of the Dniester; the Cathedral of the Nativity in Tiraspol was completed in the 2000s.

Media is controlled, protests are rare and criticism of the authorities carries risk. Human-rights groups report cases of detention of residents for social-media posts, including after 2022.

6Since 2022: squeezed between wars1 min

Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine put Transnistria on the front page. In spring 2022 a series of unexplained explosions hit the security ministry and a radio mast; Ukraine closed its border with the region, leaving it enclosed by Moldova on one side and a war zone on the other.

On 1 January 2025 Russian gas stopped flowing through Ukraine. Transnistria, which had received gas for free for decades, shut factories, cut heating and imposed rolling blackouts until supplies were arranged through Moldova with EU-backed financing. The episode showed how much the region's survival now depends on Chișinău.

Chișinău's stated aim is peaceful reintegration within an EU path; Tiraspol's leaders look to Moscow. For visitors the practical result is stable but fragile: checkpoints work, but conditions can change fast.
