Warminster

Use Warminster as a 1-night base for Longleat and the Wylye Valley, not as a town to sightsee: the centre is 2–3 hours, the countryside is the point.

Warminster is a small Wiltshire market town of about 18,000 people on the edge of Salisbury Plain, 26 km from Bath and 32 km from Salisbury. Its own centre is a short walk — an obelisk, two churches, a war memorial — and the reason to come is what sits around it: Longleat House and Safari Park, Stourhead, Iron Age hill forts and the Wylye Valley. One night covers the town and one big attraction; two nights if you want Longleat plus a country walk or a second house.

About Warminster

Warminster is a market town in Wiltshire with a population of around 18,000 at the 2011 census. It lies on the edge of Salisbury Plain, at the head of the Wylye Valley, roughly 16 miles from Bath and 20 miles from Salisbury. Most of its buildings date from the centuries when it was a successful corn market, and the trade ended more than a hundred years ago. Today it is mostly a residential town with some light industry and a military presence.

Longleat House and Safari Park, and the Longleat Forest resort, are close by. The town works as a base for around 100 nearby places of interest, among them Stonehenge, Avebury, Salisbury Cathedral, Bath Theatre Royal and the Science Museum at Wroughton. Open countryside surrounds Warminster, and several hills in the immediate area carry Iron Age hill forts, burial mounds and strip lynchets.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Entry rules depend on your passport. Full visa guide

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Buses 264/265 run roughly twice hourly Mon–Sat to Westbury, Trowbridge, Bradford on Avon and Bath, and Bodman's 24 runs hourly Mon–Sat to Salisbury; most services stop in the early evening. Trains from Warminster station run hourly each way Mon–Sat (similar on Sunday) on the Cardiff–Portsmouth line via Westbury, Bath and Salisbury; Westbury, 6 km north, has the fast London Paddington and West Country services. For Longleat, Stourhead and the hill forts you need a car or a pre-booked taxi.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime market town; the real risks are unlit country lanes, fast traffic on the A36/A350 approaches and walking Salisbury Plain where training is live. Standard UK precautions apply.
  • Buses and coaches mostly stop by early evening; check the last departure before you plan a late return.
  • Longleat Safari Park is generally closed in winter and runs weekends in spring and autumn — check dates before booking a trip around it.
  • Longleat day tickets are dated and priced by season; buy online in advance rather than at the gate.
  • Salisbury Plain is live military training land in places: keep to marked paths and respect closure notices.
  • Country lanes around the Wylye Valley have no pavement and fast traffic; walk facing oncoming traffic.
