Region
West Coast
Drive it as a 2–3 day through-route between Christchurch and the glaciers; stop at Hokitika, not Greymouth, if you only have one night.

- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- New Zealand ↗Visa-waiver visitors need an NZeTA (with the tourism levy) before travel, including many transit passengers; others need a visa. Apply only through Immigration New Zealand or its official app, and check the rules for your passport.
- New Zealand ↗Declare all food, plant and animal products, and used outdoor gear such as hiking boots and tents, on the New Zealand Traveller Declaration; undeclared risk items bring instant fines.
- New Zealand ↗Drive on the left; give way as signed at one-lane bridges; an English-language licence or one with an approved translation or International Driving Permit is required.
- New Zealand ↗Freedom camping is restricted: sleep in a vehicle only where signed as allowed, and in many places only in certified self-contained vehicles.
- South Island ↗Left-hand drive; many one-lane bridges and single-lane sections on the West Coast and Milford roads. Allow more time than the distance suggests.
- South Island ↗Weather changes fast in the high country; check the forecast before any alpine or fiord day and carry rain and warm layers.
The West Coast is a 600 km strip between the Southern Alps and the Tasman Sea, and almost everything worth stopping for sits on or just off State Highway 6. It is a through-route, not a base: two nights minimum if you want both glaciers, three if you also want Punakaiki and the Haast Pass. Rain is the default — build in a spare day rather than a tighter schedule.

Night sequences
- 2 nights
- Hokitika 1 + Franz Josef or Fox 1, driving Christchurch to the glaciers
- 3 nights
- Punakaiki or Westport 1 + Hokitika 1 + Franz Josef 1
- 4 nights
- Add a spare weather day at the glaciers, then out over Haast Pass
- Driving Christchurch to Fox Glacier in one day is 6–7 hours of winding road — split it at Hokitika or Greymouth.
- Mobile coverage stops south of Fox until the Haast area; do not rely on a phone for directions or emergencies.
- Sandflies are worst near water and at dusk; cover ankles and wrists.
- The region is isolated — carry a spare tyre, a full tank, warm clothes and water.

- Buller and Grey (Westport, Greymouth)
- Rain falls year-round; summer is the driest window and the busiest.
- Westland (Hokitika to Haast)
- Some of the highest rainfall in the country; winter here is often calmer and clearer than summer.
February to April gives the most settled weather and fewer crowds than December–January. Glacier flights and heli-hikes cancel on wind and cloud, so keep a spare day.
