Acalayong

Skip unless you need the border crossing to Gabon: a half-day stop, no overnight. The road from Bata takes 8 hours and is rough; only go if you have a 4×4 and a pirogue booked.

Acalayong is the southernmost town in Equatorial Guinea, a small border crossing on the Muni Estuary opposite Cocobeach, Gabon. It sees very few tourists. The journey from Bata is long and the road is poor; the town itself has no sights. Only visit if you are crossing into Gabon by pirogue (dugout canoe).

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • Central Africa ↗Sort the visa before the flight: none of the seven countries reliably issues tourist visas on arrival to Western passports, and e-visas here are tied to named airports.
  • Central Africa ↗Carry the original yellow fever vaccination certificate in your hand luggage; health desks at every Central African airport ask for it, and a missing card can mean refusal or a jab at the desk.
  • Central Africa ↗Before booking anything in or near the DRC, read the WHO Ebola situation page and your own government's health notice: the 2026 outbreak brought quarantine and boarding rules for people who have been in the DRC.
  • Equatorial Guinea ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport with the Equatoguinean authorities before booking: the e-visa is valid only for arrival at Malabo, and US passports have needed a visa since 2023.
  • Equatorial Guinea ↗Photography in public places has historically required a permit; do not photograph government buildings, the presidential palace, police, military or airports, and ask your hotel about current rules.
  • Equatorial Guinea ↗Book a travel-clinic visit several weeks ahead: malaria prevention is needed on Bioko and the mainland, all year.

Watch out

Safety

The main risks are the poor road from Bata and the pirogue crossing in bad weather. Carry cash and a charged phone. Border checkpoints are routine.
  • Road from Bata is in poor condition, especially in the rainy season; a 4×4 is essential.
  • Pirogues may not run in bad weather or after dark; confirm the crossing before you travel.
  • Border formalities: ensure your passport is stamped on both sides.
  • No ATMs or reliable internet; carry enough CFA francs in cash.
