Antigua and Barbuda is an independent two-island state; almost everything happens on Antigua, where you can reach most beaches within an hour. Barbuda is flat, quiet and has few places to stay, so it works best as a day trip. Rent a car or use taxis with agreed fares, and treat hurricane season (June–November) as the main planning constraint.
About Antigua and Barbuda
Antigua (280 km²) and Barbuda (160 km²) have about 100,000 people (check), almost all on Antigua. Sugar plantations worked by enslaved Africans covered Antigua for two centuries, while Barbuda was leased to the Codrington family and never planted. Britain's navy based its Caribbean fleet at English Harbour. Independent since 1981, the country lives on tourism, with a citizenship-by-investment programme also bringing income.

Two islands, one flag and very different stories. Antigua was cleared for sugar and fortified by the Royal Navy; Barbuda was leased to one family, never planted, and kept its land in common. The five chapters follow sugar and emancipation, the navy at English Harbour, Barbuda before and after Hurricane Irma, the food of the cook-shops, and the country today.
1Sugar and freedom1 min
English settlers arrived in 1632, and within a century Antigua was almost entirely sugar cane, with more than 150 windmills grinding it. The work was done by enslaved Africans, who made up the great majority of the population. A planned uprising in 1736 was betrayed, and its leaders, including the man known as Prince Klaas, were executed.
Antigua freed enslaved people outright on 1 August 1834, without the 'apprenticeship' period used in most British colonies. Sugar lingered until the 1970s. Betty's Hope, the Codrington family's estate, has a restored windmill and a small museum.

2The navy's harbour1 min
English Harbour is a narrow, hurricane-proof inlet, and in the 18th century the Royal Navy built a dockyard there to careen and repair its Caribbean fleet. The young Horatio Nelson was based there in the 1780s and disliked it. Batteries and barracks on Shirley Heights guarded the entrance.
The dockyard was abandoned in 1889, restored from the 1950s, and in 2016 became a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the surrounding forts. It is still a working yacht harbour, and the centre of Antigua Sailing Week and the winter charter-yacht show.

3Barbuda after Irma1 min
Barbuda was leased to the Codrington family from 1685 to raise food and livestock rather than sugar. After emancipation Barbudans kept a tradition of holding land in common, later written into the Barbuda Land Act of 2007. Codrington Lagoon holds one of the largest frigatebird colonies in the region.
In September 2017 Hurricane Irma passed directly over the island, damaging or destroying almost every building, and the whole population was evacuated to Antigua for weeks. During the rebuilding the national government changed the land law to allow freehold ownership and pushed through a new airport and large resorts, which many Barbudans oppose; court cases followed.
The Burton–Nibbs airport opened in October 2024, and several new resorts and guesthouses have opened or are under construction (check). Barbuda is quieter than before the storm, and its services are thin: plan cash, food and transport ahead.

4Fungee, pepperpot and ducana1 min
Antiguan food comes from the plantation provision grounds: cornmeal stirred with okra into fungee, a stew of greens and salted meat called pepperpot, and ducana — sweet potato and coconut steamed in a leaf. Saltfish, once shipped in barrels as cheap protein for enslaved workers, is still a breakfast staple.
The Antigua black pineapple, small and very sweet, is on the national coat of arms. Goat water, a spicy stew, is party food; Wadadli beer and English Harbour rum are made on the island.

5The country today1 min
Antigua and Barbuda became independent in 1981 under V. C. Bird, whose family dominated politics for decades. Tourism accounts for most jobs, and a citizenship-by-investment programme brings in a large share of state revenue; its future depends partly on US and EU pressure on such schemes (check).
Visitors mostly see the resort coasts, but St John's, with its cathedral, market and bus stations, is where island life happens. Carnival at the end of July and early August, marking emancipation, is the year's big event.
