Aruba applies the Kingdom of the Netherlands' visa list for its Caribbean parts, not Schengen rules. Most Western and Latin American passports are visa-free for up to 90 days (the officer may give fewer — check). Every air arrival must complete the online Embarkation-Disembarkation (ED) card at edcardaruba.aw within 7 days before arrival; the card itself is free, but the US$20 sustainability fee (travellers aged 8+, once per calendar year — check) is paid in the same process, and airlines check the approval at boarding. Visa-required nationals need a Caribbean Kingdom visa, or may be exempt with a valid multiple-entry US, Canadian, UK, Irish or Schengen visa — check. On the way out, US-bound flights clear US immigration in Aruba.

1From Caquetío island to status aparte1 min

The first Arubans were Caquetío, an Arawak-speaking people from the Venezuelan coast, who lived in villages, farmed and fished, and left red-and-white drawings on the walls of caves and boulders. The Spanish, arriving in 1499, judged the island useless for farming and deported most of its people to work on Hispaniola.

The Dutch West India Company took Aruba in 1636 and used it mainly as a ranch for horses and cattle serving Curaçao. Settlement by Europeans was restricted for long stretches, so Amerindian ancestry survived here more than on the neighbouring islands. Fort Zoutman, built in 1798, is the oldest building in Oranjestad.

Gold was found in 1824, and for about a century mills at Bushiribana and Balashi processed ore. Aloe followed, then oil: in 1924 the Lago refinery opened at San Nicolas, drawing workers from across the English-speaking Caribbean and turning the south-east into a boom town.

Resentment at being governed from Curaçao inside the Netherlands Antilles grew after the Second World War. Led by Gilberto 'Betico' Croes, Aruba won status aparte on 1 January 1986 and became a separate country within the Kingdom, keeping its own parliament, currency and immigration rules.

2People and Papiamento1 min

Around 108,000 people live on Aruba, with roots in the Caquetío, Europe, Africa, the English-speaking Caribbean, Venezuela and Colombia; more than 90 nationalities are counted in the census. Many families speak three or four languages at home and at work.

Papiamento grew from contact between African, Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch speakers in the 1600s and 1700s. Aruba writes it with an etymological spelling close to Spanish (Papiamento), while Curaçao and Bonaire use a phonetic system (Papiamentu). It became an official language beside Dutch in 2003.

Island identity is displayed on 18 March, Flag and Anthem Day, and in Carnival, which is especially strong in San Nicolas, where the refinery years left a Caribbean-English culture of steel pan and calypso.

3Cheese, cornmeal and fish1 min

Aruban cooking is built on what a dry island could store or catch: salted meat, dried fish, cornmeal, beans, goat and whatever came in on ships. Funchi (cornmeal) and pan bati (a thick griddle pancake) accompany most meals.

Keshi yena began as a way to use the rinds of Dutch Edam or Gouda: the leftover shell was stuffed with spiced meat scraps and baked. It is now the national dish, usually made with chicken. Pastechi, half-moon pastries filled with cheese or meat, are the standard breakfast on the go.

The Dutch-Indonesian thread shows in saté and peanut sauce; the Venezuelan and Colombian threads in arepas and ayaca at Christmas. Fresh fish is best at the working fishermen's docks on the south coast.

4Desert island, fringing reef1 min

Aruba gets only about 400–500 mm of rain a year. Its interior is cactus and divi-divi scrub on old volcanic and diorite rock, with limestone terraces along the coasts. Arikok National Park, created in 2000, covers roughly a fifth of the island and protects endemic species such as the Aruban whiptail lizard, the Aruban rattlesnake and the local burrowing owl (shoco).

The leeward west and south coasts have calm water, fringing reefs and seagrass; the windward north and east coasts take the full swell and are for walking, not swimming. Sea turtles nest on Eagle Beach and other beaches between about March and August.

Tap water is produced by desalination, one of the older large plants in the region, which is why the island can support its resorts despite almost no fresh water of its own.

5Life in the trade wind1 min

The north-east trade wind blows almost every day, strongest from about May to August. It keeps the heat bearable, bends the fofoti trees on Eagle Beach into their famous shapes, and makes the north coast wild.

The wind also explains why the island sits outside the usual hurricane tracks: storms generally form and pass further north. That does not mean immunity — distant storms send swell and can disrupt flights — but a direct hit is rare, which is why Aruba sells itself as a year-round destination.

For visitors the wind has two sides: excellent kitesurfing and windsurfing on the flat water off Fisherman's Huts, and a strong sun that feels mild until the burn appears.

Tourism makes up most of the economy, with the majority of visitors from the United States. US pre-clearance at the airport, dollar prices and English everywhere make the island feel close to home for them, and the resort strip on Palm Beach carries most of the load.

To manage the cost of that success, Aruba moved immigration paperwork online with the ED card and, from July 2024, added a US$20 sustainability fee paid through it (check current terms). Hotel taxes and a per-night environmental levy also fund infrastructure.

Venezuela is 25 km away, and its crises have shaped Aruba through migration, border closures and suspended flights, including disruption to regional air traffic after the US operation in Venezuela in January 2026. For visitors, check your airline and the current advice before travel.
