Canterbury

Short trip (4–5 days): Christchurch 2 nights plus one Mackenzie night. With a week or more, give Christchurch 3 and the Mackenzie Country 2–3 — Tekapo, Pukaki and Aoraki/Mount Cook are separate stops, not one.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • New Zealand ↗Visa-waiver visitors need an NZeTA (with the tourism levy) before travel, including many transit passengers; others need a visa. Apply only through Immigration New Zealand or its official app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • New Zealand ↗Declare all food, plant and animal products, and used outdoor gear such as hiking boots and tents, on the New Zealand Traveller Declaration; undeclared risk items bring instant fines.
  • New Zealand ↗Drive on the left; give way as signed at one-lane bridges; an English-language licence or one with an approved translation or International Driving Permit is required.
  • New Zealand ↗Freedom camping is restricted: sleep in a vehicle only where signed as allowed, and in many places only in certified self-contained vehicles.
  • South Island ↗Left-hand drive; many one-lane bridges and single-lane sections on the West Coast and Milford roads. Allow more time than the distance suggests.
  • South Island ↗Weather changes fast in the high country; check the forecast before any alpine or fiord day and carry rain and warm layers.

Canterbury is the South Island's flat, fast middle: the Canterbury Plains run from Kaikoura's edge down to the Waitaki River, with Christchurch and its airport at the centre and the Mackenzie Country — Tekapo, Pukaki, Aoraki/Mount Cook — pushed up against the Southern Alps. Most travellers cross it in a day on State Highway 1 or 8. That works, but it wastes the region: Christchurch deserves a base, the Mackenzie lakes deserve a night, and Banks Peninsula is a half-day detour off the highway. Drive it, don't just pass through it.

  • Christchurch to Lake Tekapo is about 3 hours each way — do not attempt it as a same-day return with sightseeing.
  • Arthur's Pass (SH 73) can be closed by snow in winter; have a plan B via SH 1 and SH 8.
  • One-lane bridges are common on rural Canterbury roads; slow down and check for oncoming traffic.

Canterbury Plains and Christchurch
Mild coastal climate; nor'west winds can push summer temperatures into the 30s °C. Winter days are cool but rarely freezing on the coast.
Mackenzie Country and Alps
Inland alpine basin: cold winters with snow, warm dry summers. Clear winter nights are the best for stargazing but temperatures drop well below freezing.

Best months for a road trip are December to March (summer) and the shoulder months of October–November and March–April. Winter (June–August) suits skiing at Mount Hutt and Ohau but closes some alpine roads.
