Dover

Give Dover one full day for the castle and the cliffs, sleep one night, then move on: the town itself is a port, not a base.

Dover is the closest port to mainland Europe, 21 miles from Calais, and the busiest cross-Channel port in the UK. Travellers come for two things: Dover Castle, with its Roman lighthouse and the wartime tunnels where the Dunkirk evacuation was planned, and the White Cliffs. The town centre is small and plain; most of the day is spent on Castle Hill or on the cliff path. One night covers it. Two nights only if you want the cliffs, Samphire Hoe and a day trip to Canterbury or Deal.

About Dover

Dover is a port town in East Kent, on the English Channel. It lies 21 miles (34 km) from Calais, making it the nearest port to mainland Europe on the British mainland. Ferries run to Calais and Dunkirk, and about 18 million passengers pass through each year. The town is best known for its castle and for the white chalk cliffs, which have been celebrated in song.

The town centre is compact and the main shops sit on King Street, Cannon Street and Biggin Street. Most sights cluster on Castle Hill or along the cliffs east of town. Trains arrive at Dover Priory, the only remaining station, roughly 2.25 km from the ferry port, with no shuttle bus in between.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

What is worth your time in Dover.

  • Dover Castle — Called the "Key to England", it holds 2,000 years of history, from a Roman lighthouse and Saxon church to a Norman keep, with chalk tunnels beneath.
  • Church of St Mary in Castro — A 10th-century Saxon church inside the castle grounds, later renovated in the Victorian era after use as a coal store.
  • Roman Lighthouse (Pharos) — Stands beside the church and is the oldest building still standing in the UK.
  • The Great Tower — Henry II's square keep, built to project royal authority, with rooms restored to their 1200s appearance and a spiral staircase to the top.
  • Dover Museum and Bronze Age Boat Gallery — Holds Roman remains and a 3,500-year-old wooden boat preserved in mud; entry is free.

Getting around

Dover is walkable: the centre, the castle gate and the seafront are within about 20 minutes of each other. Stagecoach East Kent runs local buses to Deal, Folkestone and Canterbury. There is no shuttle between Dover Priory station and the ferry port, so plan a taxi or a 2.25 km walk with bags. Southeastern is the train operator.

Watch out

Safety

Dover is a small, safe town by day; the real risks are cliff edges, the steep castle hill and late-night quiet around the port. Standard UK precautions apply.
  • No shuttle bus between Dover Priory station and the ferry port: it is a 2.25 km (1.4 mi) walk or a taxi.
  • The castle is on a steep hill; the walk up from town takes 15–20 min.
  • Cliff edges near the White Cliffs are unfenced in places and the chalk crumbles: keep back from the edge, especially in wind.
  • Ferry foot-passenger crossings are limited and not every operator takes foot passengers: check before booking.
  • Cross-Channel sailings can be delayed by weather; leave a buffer if you have a flight or train onward.
