Suriname is small, Dutch-speaking and mostly rainforest; nearly all visitors base in Paramaribo, whose wooden inner city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Trips break on interior access (river boats, small planes and rough roads) and on entry paperwork: most visitors must pay an online entry fee and fill in an immigration form before arrival. Book lodge trips as packages with transport included, carry euros or dollars in cash, and remember that driving is on the left.

About Suriname

A former Dutch plantation colony between Guyana and French Guiana, independent since 1975. About 620,000 people of Hindustani, Creole, Maroon, Javanese, mixed, Indigenous and Chinese origin live mostly on the coast; the interior is among the most forested countries on earth. Offshore oil (GranMorgu, first production planned about 2028) is expected to reshape the economy.

Suriname has no classic tourist visa for most Western passports; instead visitors pay an online entry fee (about US$50–58 with processing — check) through the government's VFS portal before travel and get up to 90 days. CARICOM citizens, and a few others such as Guyanese, Japanese and Russian passport holders, enter free. Some nationalities, including Indians and South Africans, need an e-visa. Everyone fills in the online Immigration and Customs Form (ICF) up to 3 days before arrival and departure. Passports must be valid 6 months.

The smallest country in South America, where a mosque and a synagogue share a street, Maroon villages keep 18th-century freedom treaties, and nine-tenths of the land is forest. 1A plantation colony traded for New York1 min

English planters from Barbados settled the Suriname River in 1650; the Dutch took the colony in 1667 and kept it under the Treaty of Breda, which let England keep New Amsterdam — now New York. Hundreds of sugar, coffee and cacao plantations lined the rivers, worked by enslaved Africans under one of the harshest regimes in the Americas. A Jewish community built Jodensavanne, one of the oldest synagogue sites in the hemisphere, in the forest south of Paramaribo.

Slavery was abolished on 1 July 1863 — Keti Koti, 'the chains are broken' — though the freed were forced to keep working for ten more years. Planters then brought indentured labourers from British India (from 1873) and Java (from 1890). Independence came in 1975; a military coup in 1980 under Dési Bouterse led to the December murders of 1982 and a civil war with the Maroon Jungle Commando in the late 1980s.

2Many peoples, one street1 min

No group forms a majority. Hindustanis, descended from Indian indentured workers, are the largest; then Maroons, Creoles, Javanese, mixed families, Indigenous peoples (Kaliña, Lokono, Trio, Wayana and others), Chinese, Lebanese and Brazilians who came for gold. Each has its own holidays, and most are public holidays for all.

In Paramaribo the Neveh Shalom synagogue and the Keizerstraat mosque stand side by side, a symbol Surinamese point to often. Close ties with the Netherlands remain: about 350,000 people of Surinamese origin live there, and the Amsterdam flight is the lifeline for families.

3Roti shops and warungs1 min

Suriname's food is the history of its migrations on a plate. Hindustani roti with curried chicken and long beans is everyday lunch; Javanese warungs serve saoto soup, bami and nasi, and whole families drive out to the warungs of Lelydorp and Blauwgrond on Sundays. Creole kitchens make pom — baked pomtajer root with chicken, a Jewish-Creole dish — plus peanut soup and heri heri.

Chinese restaurants and sandwich bars fill the gaps; a broodje pom or broodje bakkeljauw is the Surinamese sandwich. Madame Jeanette peppers heat everything, Parbo beer is shared in large bottles, and the Dutch have taken much of this cooking home: Surinamese food is now part of everyday Dutch eating.

4Forest, rivers and turtles1 min

Over 90% of Suriname is forest on the Guiana Shield, crossed by the Corantijn, Coppename, Suriname and Marowijne rivers. The Central Suriname Nature Reserve (UNESCO since 2000) protects 16,000 km² of untouched forest with the Voltzberg granite dome and Raleighvallen falls. Brokopondo lake, created by the Afobaka dam in 1964, flooded villages and forest; Brownsberg park looks over it.

The coast is mangrove and mudflat, home to scarlet ibis and to the Guiana dolphins of the Suriname River mouth. Leatherback and green turtles nest on the beaches of Galibi and Braamspunt. Gold mining, much of it small-scale and illegal, is the main threat, releasing mercury into rivers.

5Maroons of the Upper Suriname1 min

Enslaved Africans who escaped the plantations formed free communities deep in the forest. After decades of war, the Ndyuka (1760) and Saramaka (1762) signed peace treaties with the colony, more than a century before abolition. Their descendants live along the Upper Suriname and Marowijne rivers, with their own languages, clan chiefs (granman), woodcarving, and religious life built on West African traditions.

The Inter-American Court ruled in 2007 that the Saramaka hold collective rights to their land, a landmark in Indigenous and tribal law. Visitors reach the villages by canoe from Atjoni; lodges are often village-owned. Follow your guide on where to walk and what not to photograph.

6Travelling Suriname today1 min

Most visitors arrive on the Amsterdam flight or via Panama, the Caribbean or Belém. Before flying, pay the online entry fee (or get an e-visa if your passport needs one) and fill in the ICF form. Paramaribo's centre is walkable by day; taxis at night. Carry euros or dollars in cash.

The interior works as packages: road and canoe to the Upper Suriname River, charter planes to Raleighvallen. The dry seasons (August–November, February–April) are best. Overland, a daily ferry goes to Guyana and pirogues cross the Marowijne to French Guiana. Offshore oil, with first production expected around 2028, may change prices and the pace of life.
