Telford

Spend a half‑day to see the town centre and park, then a half‑day for Ironbridge gorge; one full day is enough for a quick visit.
Telford is a modern new town built around historic Ironbridge, the birthplace of the industrial revolution. Its centre offers shopping, a large park and an ice rink, while the nearby Ironbridge World Heritage Site adds museums and the iconic iron bridge. A day‑trip to the gorge plus a quick town walk covers the main sights.

About Telford
Telford is a new town in Shropshire, England, administered within the West Midlands region. It was formed in the 1960s and 1970s by combining existing mining villages, farms and market towns, and takes its name from the civil engineer Thomas Telford. With 165,000 residents (2024), it is the largest town in Shropshire. The town stretches from Wellington to Shifnal and from Donnington to Madeley, and the Telford Shopping Centre and Telford Town Park area serves as its administrative centre.
Telford carries the tagline "The birthplace of industry", reflecting the role of the Coalport and Ironbridge areas in the industrial revolution. The world's first iron bridge was built across the river Severn at Ironbridge in 1779, and the gorge holds 10 museums covering iron production and Coalport china. The Wrekin, a hill southwest of Wellington with a Bronze Age fort, is a local landmark.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
- Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
- Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
- United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
- United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
- United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.
Entry rules depend on your passport. Full visa guide

- Coalport china — China produced at Coalport was internationally acclaimed and exported via the river Severn.
Customs
- Telford has a reputation, not entirely deserved, as a working-class town that housed overspill from Wolverhampton and Birmingham; many residents commute to those cities.
- The town's tagline, "The birthplace of industry", appears on many signs.
- Telford is known for having more than 120 roundabouts, which may seem jarring to visitors unused to them.
