Visa runs and border runs

Pick your passport: the stay each country gives you, what you can extend without leaving, the usual run routes, and where repeated runs now get questioned at the border.

Was this useful?

What a visa run is

A visa run is leaving a country when your permitted stay ends and coming straight back for a fresh one. A border run does the same over the nearest land border, often the same day; a flight run uses a cheap return flight to a neighbour.

Is it legal?

No country promises a new stay on re-entry. Each arrival is a fresh decision by the border officer, who can shorten your stay, ask for proof of funds and an onward ticket, or refuse entry. Back-to-back runs are the pattern officers look for: several countries now count entries per year or total days per year, and some write those limits into law. Treat every run as a gamble on the officer's discretion — check the current rules before each one.

Often the better option

If you want to stay months, a proper long-stay route (tourist visa with extensions, digital-nomad or long-stay visa, a visa that allows multiple entries) is usually cheaper than repeated runs and does not end with a refusal at the border.

Stays come from the Voykit entry data for each country; your exact case is on the entry check.

The common cases

  • Allowed stay

E-visa before you fly · 60 days (tourist visa)(your passport is not listed; this is the general rule)

Get the e-visa before you fly; airlines deny boarding without it.

With this passport each return needs a new visa or authorisation — a run is a new application, not a stamp.

General picture: Visa exemption of 30 days for most Western passports since 15 September 2026 (it was 60 days); some bilateral deals give 90 — check.

    Extend without leaving
One 30-day extension at an immigration office has usually been possible (about ฿1,900) — check under the 2026 rules. A 60-day tourist e-visa taken before you fly is the cleaner route for longer trips.
    Typical runs
    • Bangkok or Isan → Nong Khai → Friendship Bridge → Vientiane (Laos), back the same or next day.
    • Hat Yai → Sadao or Padang Besar → Malaysia, back by bus or train.
    • Flight run from Bangkok, Phuket or Chiang Mai to Kuala Lumpur, Penang or Singapore.
    • Cambodia crossings (Aranyaprathet–Poipet, Hat Lek–Koh Kong) were closed in the 2025 dispute — check before you plan on them.
    Risks
    • Land entries under the visa exemption are limited to two per calendar year, with exceptions for some neighbouring nationalities — check.
    • Officers question travellers with many back-to-back exemption stamps and can ask for ฿20,000 in cash or a return ticket — check.
    • The TDAC digital arrival card is needed on every entry, including the return leg of a run.

  • Allowed stay

E-visa before you fly · Up to 90 days(your passport is not listed; this is the general rule)

Apply online before you fly, print the PDF, and enter through the port named on it.

With this passport each return needs a new visa or authorisation — a run is a new application, not a stamp.

General picture: E-visa up to 90 days, single or multiple entry; visa exemption of 45 days for many European and some Asian passports — check.

    Extend without leaving
Extensions inside Vietnam go through agencies or a sponsor and cost more than a new e-visa — check. A 90-day multiple-entry e-visa lets you leave and come back without a new application.
    Typical runs
    • Hồ Chí Minh City → Mộc Bài → Bavet (Cambodia) by bus, with the Cambodian visa on arrival or e-visa.
    • Central Vietnam → Lao Bảo → Dansavanh (Laos).
    • Flight run to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, then a new e-visa or exemption on return.
    Risks
    • An e-visa is valid only at the entry port you named — re-enter where the new e-visa says, not where it is convenient.
    • Visa-exempt stays and e-visas are separate: repeated exemption entries can be refused — check.
    • Overstays are fined per day at exit, and airlines check the e-visa before boarding.

  • Allowed stay

E-visa before you fly · 30 days(your passport is not listed; this is the general rule)

Apply on evisa.gov.kh before you fly; a visa on arrival (about US$30 cash and a photo) is also available at the airports and open land crossings. One 30-day extension is possible in Phnom Penh.

The e-visa is accepted only at listed entry points — check yours.

With this passport each return needs a new visa or authorisation — a run is a new application, not a stamp.

General picture: Tourist e-visa or visa on arrival, 30 days; ASEAN passports visa-exempt for 14–30 days — check.

    Extend without leaving
A tourist visa extends once for 30 days in Phnom Penh; the ordinary (business) visa extends for months through agencies — check the current categories.
    Typical runs
    • Phnom Penh → Bavet → Mộc Bài (Vietnam), only if you already hold a Vietnam e-visa or exemption.
    • Stung Treng → Trapeang Kriel → Nong Nok Khiene (Laos).
    Risks
    • Thailand–Cambodia land borders were closed in the 2025 dispute — check before any overland run.
    • The e-visa is valid only at listed entry points; visa on arrival fees in US dollars with 'extra' charges are common at land posts — check.

    • Johor Bahru → Woodlands or Tuas → Singapore, back the same day.

  • Allowed stay

E-visa before you fly · 60 days(your passport is not listed; this is the general rule)

Apply before travel; not eligible for VOA.

With this passport each return needs a new visa or authorisation — a run is a new application, not a stamp.

General picture: E-VOA or visa on arrival, 30 days; ASEAN passports visa-free for 30 days (not extendable) — check.

    Extend without leaving
The VOA extends once for 30 days, online on the immigration site before it expires, for 60 days in total — check. The single-entry tourist e-visa (60 days, extendable) suits longer stays.
    Typical runs
    • Bali or Jakarta → flight to Singapore or Kuala Lumpur.
    • Batam or Bintan → ferry to Singapore (popular from Sumatra).
    Risks
    • Visa-free ASEAN stays cannot be extended or converted — check.

    Risks
    • Airlines refuse boarding without an onward ticket out of the Philippines — check.

General picture: Visa-free up to 365 days for about 95 passports (EU, UK, US, Canada, Australia, Japan and more) — check.

  • Allowed stay

Visa from an embassy · 180 days(your passport is not listed; this is the general rule)

Visa needed from a Mexican consulate unless you hold a qualifying US, Canadian, UK, Schengen or Japanese visa or residence.

Appointment waits can be long — check.

With this passport each return needs a new visa or authorisation — a run is a new application, not a stamp.

General picture: Visa-free for most Western passports; the officer sets the days, up to 180, and many visitors now get fewer — check what you were given.

    Extend without leaving

    Typical runs
    • Tijuana → San Ysidro (United States) and back; you need to be able to enter the US.
    • Chetumal → Belize by road or boat.
    Risks
    • Frequent re-entries are sent to secondary inspection; officers can give a few days or refuse — check.

  • Schengen area

    Allowed stay

90 days in any 180 across all 29 Schengen states combined, for visa-exempt visitors — check.

    Extend without leaving
No run is possible: leaving and coming back does not reset the 90/180 count. Time in the UK, Ireland, the Western Balkans, Turkey or Georgia lets old days roll off. A few bilateral agreements allow extra days in one country — check with that country.
    Typical runs
    • None. Wait out the 180-day window outside the area, or apply for a national long-stay visa.
    Risks
    • EES biometric registration logs every entry and exit — overstays are now visible automatically.
    • Overstays bring fines and entry bans recorded across the whole area.

    Extend without leaving
Only a handful of passports (for example UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Mexico) can apply at a regional immigration bureau to extend to six months — check.

    • Fukuoka → ferry or flight to Busan (Korea) and back.
    • Flight runs to Seoul, Taipei or Shanghai.

  • Allowed stay

Online authorisation · 90 days(your passport is not listed; this is the general rule)

Apply for K-ETA before you fly; without an approval the airline will not board you.

Children aged 17 and under and adults 65 and over do not need a K-ETA. Lookalike K-ETA sites charge several times the fee; use only k-eta.go.kr.

With this passport each return needs a new visa or authorisation — a run is a new application, not a stamp.

General picture: Visa-free 90 days for many passports, with K-ETA or under the temporary K-ETA exemption — check.

    Extend without leaving
Visitor stays are not normally extended except for illness or emergencies — check with HiKorea.
    Typical runs
    • Busan → ferry to Fukuoka (Japan).
    • Flight runs to Tokyo, Osaka or Taipei.
    Risks
    • Visitors who spend most of a year in Korea on repeated visa-free entries have been refused; a total near 180 days in a year is widely reported as the practical limit — check.

Before any run

  • Count your days exactly: the day you arrive and the day you leave both usually count (check).
  • Check whether your stay can be extended inside the country first — it is often cheaper than a run.
  • Carry an onward ticket out of the country you re-enter, proof of accommodation and some cash or a bank statement.
  • Keep six months of passport validity and blank pages; land posts stamp generously.
  • Confirm the crossing is open to foreigners and issues the entry you need (visa on arrival and e-visas are post-specific).
  • Book agency 'visa run' buses only with operators that show the full price; touts at the border sell fake 'fast' visas.
  • Never overstay to save a run: fines are per day and some countries add bans or detention.

Plan the route on land border crossings and A to B; count Schengen days on the Schengen calculator.
