Worthing

Give Worthing one full day plus a night if you want the pier and South Downs; two nights if it is your base for Arundel, Chichester and Brighton.

Worthing is the largest town in West Sussex, a seaside town with a free pier, a promenade and the South Downs National Park starting just north of the built-up area. It is 75 minutes from London by train and about 20 minutes from Brighton, so most visitors use it as a quiet coastal base rather than a destination in itself. One day covers the seafront, the museum and a hill walk; two nights let you add Arundel or Chichester without rushing.

About Worthing

Worthing is the largest town in West Sussex, sitting between the English Channel and the South Downs National Park. It has a pier, a promenade and seaside parks, and has carried the nickname 'Sunny Worthing' since the 19th century because of its mild, reputedly sunny climate. Around 100,000 people live in the town, which anchors an urban area of 185,000 and, together with Brighton, forms part of England's tenth largest conurbation. It lies roughly 100 km south of London and 18 km along the coast from Brighton, with trains from the capital taking about 75 minutes.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Montague and South Streets sit one block from the seafront. Stagecoach runs town buses, with the Pulse every 10 min daytime between Durrington and Lancing and the 700 Coastliner along the coast to Brighton and Littlehampton every 15–20 min. Southern Railway serves Worthing station plus East Worthing, West Worthing, Durrington-on-Sea and Goring-by-Sea. Bikes can be hired on the seafront; the South Coast Cycle Route runs east along the promenade.

Watch out

Safety

Worthing is a low-crime seaside town and safe to walk in the centre by day. The real risks are cold water and strong currents off the beach, unlit paths on the South Downs after dark, and late-night drinkers around the South Street strip: keep to lit streets and take a taxi back if you are staying outside the centre.
  • The sea is cold year-round and the beach is shingle in places: swimming is for strong swimmers only, and there are no lifeguards outside the summer season.
  • Seafront restaurants and attractions run shorter hours or close in winter; check before a special trip.
  • Parking near the seafront fills on sunny weekends; use the station car parks or come by train.
  • The South Downs weather changes fast: take a waterproof for any hill walk.
