Give Berkhamsted one full day: castle ruins, canal towpath and Ashridge woods. Sleep in London or St Albans and come by train, 35–45 min from Euston.

Berkhamsted is a small Hertfordshire market town about 30 miles north of London, with a Norman castle ruin beside the station, a canal running through the centre and the Ashridge Estate woods on the ridge above. The High Street is flat and walkable end to end in under 20 minutes, so a day covers the castle, the church, the canal and a pub lunch, with a longer walk or the Bridgewater Monument if the weather holds. It works as a day trip from London rather than a base: hotels are few and priced for commuters, and the evening offer is pubs and one cinema.

About Berkhamsted

Berkhamsted is a market town in Hertfordshire, England, with a population of 18,500 (2016). It lies roughly 30 miles north of London. The High Street follows a pre-Roman route whose Saxon name is Akeman Street, and the town was recorded as an ancient borough in the Domesday Book in 1086. Berkhamsted is known for its castle ruins beside the railway station, a stretch of the Grand Union Canal through the centre, and the Ashridge Estate woodland above the town. The town centre is flat, and the walk from the station to most destinations takes under 15 minutes. In the 21st century it has become an affluent commuter town.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Getting around

The centre is flat and small: the station to the far end of the High Street is under 15 minutes on foot. Local buses are run by Red Rose and Arriva and connect Tring, Hemel Hempstead and Aylesbury; plan with Intalink. For Ashridge, the Bridgewater Monument and Pitstone Windmill, take a taxi or drive — the walk up is steep and there is no useful bus.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime commuter town; the realistic risks are traffic on the A41 and High Street, unlit towpath and woodland paths after dark, and slippery chalk mud on Ashridge walks in winter.
  • Berkhamsted Castle is free and open daily but closes at dusk: go before late afternoon in winter.
  • Ashridge House is a college and opens only on listed days; check before travelling.
  • Pitstone Windmill opens only on summer bank holidays.
  • The Bridgewater Monument charges a small climb fee and is not free for non-members.
  • Trains from London Euston run roughly four times an hour by day, but the last service back is early enough to matter: check the timetable.
