Kyrgyz history was kept in memory. The Manas epic tells of a hero who unites the scattered Kyrgyz tribes against their enemies, followed by the stories of his son Semetey and grandson Seytek. Recited versions run to hundreds of thousands of lines, and performers called manaschi learn it by ear and deliver it in a trance-like chant. UNESCO lists the Kyrgyz epic trilogy as intangible heritage.

The Kyrgyz themselves trace their origins to the upper Yenisei in Siberia, where Chinese chronicles record a 'Kyrgyz' people with red hair and green eyes; in 840 they destroyed the Uyghur khaganate in Mongolia. Over the following centuries groups moved south-west into the Tian Shan, mixing with Turkic and Mongol peoples already there.

The epic became a pillar of national identity after independence. Bishkek's main square and airport, the national university and countless statues carry Manas's name, and in 1995 the state celebrated a supposed thousandth anniversary. Hearing a manaschi perform, even for a few minutes, is one of the most direct connections to the older culture.

Mountains did not keep trade out. A northern branch of the Silk Road ran through the Chuy valley and around Issyk-Kul, and the Karakhanid state (10th–12th centuries) had a capital at Balasagun, whose surviving minaret is the stump now called Burana Tower. The meadow beside it holds balbal stones, carved figures from earlier Turkic graves.

Further south, Uzgen preserves Karakhanid mausoleums and a minaret with fine brick patterns, and Osh, one of the oldest cities in Central Asia, grew around the rock of Sulaiman-Too, a place of pilgrimage for well over a thousand years. High in the Naryn region, the stone caravanserai of Tash Rabat sheltered caravans heading for Kashgar over the Torugart pass.

The buildings are few compared with Uzbekistan, because nomads built little in stone. What they left instead are petroglyphs on boulders along Issyk-Kul's north shore, burial mounds (kurgans) and the lake's legends of drowned cities, some confirmed by underwater archaeology.

The yurt (boz uy) is a lattice of willow, a ring of curved poles and a crown (tunduk) at the top, covered with felt. It goes up in an hour and moves on a few horses. The tunduk is so central that it appears on the national flag. Inside, space is ordered: the place of honour faces the door, men traditionally sit on one side and women on the other.

Transhumance, moving herds to high pastures (jailoo) in summer, survived the Soviet collective farms, which sent herders up with state flocks. Today families still move up in June and down in September, and many open their yurts to guests. The yurt camps at Song-Kul and elsewhere are a modern tourism layer on a real seasonal practice.

Felt is the material of nomad life: shyrdak are mosaic carpets of cut and stitched felt pieces, ala-kiyiz are pressed felt rugs with patterns rolled in. Women's co-operatives in Kochkor and elsewhere keep the craft going. The white felt ak kalpak hat is the national emblem, with its own day each March.

The Kokand Khanate controlled the region until Russia conquered it in 1876. Russian settlers took pasture land for farms in the Chuy valley and around Issyk-Kul. When the tsar tried to conscript Central Asians for labour behind the lines in 1916, the Kyrgyz revolted; the reprisals and the flight over the mountains to China in winter killed a large share of the population. The event, called Urkun (the exodus), is now remembered each November.

Soviet power created the Kirghiz Autonomous Oblast in 1924 and a full republic in 1936. Collectivisation forced nomads into settled farms, and the purges of 1937–38 killed much of the educated class; the Ata-Beyit memorial outside Bishkek holds their remains, and those of the writer Chingiz Aitmatov, whose father was executed there.

The Soviet state also built roads, schools and the city of Frunze (now Bishkek), with its grid of tree-lined streets. Karakol's wooden Orthodox cathedral and its pagoda-style Dungan mosque, built by Chinese Muslim refugees, show the mixed population the empire brought in.

Most Kyrgyz are Sunni Muslims, but Islam arrived late in the mountains and blended with older beliefs in Tengri, the sky, and in spirits of ancestors and places. You see this at mazar shrines: trees and springs hung with strips of cloth, stones and horns placed on graves, and pilgrims walking around Sulaiman-Too in Osh.

The Soviet state discouraged religion, and after 1991 mosques multiplied, often funded from abroad. The government now promotes a traditional, moderate Islam and watches for groups it calls extremist. Rules on dress are relaxed in Bishkek; in the south and in villages, modest clothes are expected.

Cemeteries are worth noticing on any drive: domed and fenced tombs in brick or metal, some shaped like yurts, on hillsides above villages.

In the 1990s Kyrgyzstan was called the 'island of democracy' in Central Asia. It became better known for turbulence: street protests toppled governments in 2005 (the Tulip Revolution), 2010 and 2020. In June 2010 ethnic violence between Kyrgyz and Uzbeks in Osh and Jalal-Abad killed hundreds.

Sadyr Japarov, freed from prison during the 2020 protests, became president in 2021 and a new constitution strengthened the presidency. Laws on 'foreign agents', media and LGBT 'propaganda' followed, and critics have been prosecuted. At the same time the state nationalised the Kumtor gold mine and has promoted tourism.

Border fighting with Tajikistan in 2021 and 2022 killed around a hundred people, mostly in Batken. A border treaty signed in March 2025 settled the line and reopened crossings. Many Kyrgyz work in Russia, and their remittances make up a large share of the economy.
