New Mills

Stop for 2–4 hours between Manchester and the Peak District, not a base: walk the Torrs gorge, then move on to Hayfield or Buxton.
New Mills is a small mill town where the Rivers Sett and Goyt cut gritstone gorges through the centre, contained in a park called the Torrs. It sits on the A6 and two rail lines between Manchester and the Peak District, so it works as a half-day break with a walk, not as a destination in its own right. Sleep here only if you want a cheap, quiet base for the Sett Valley Trail and Kinder Scout country.

About New Mills
New Mills is a small mill town in Derbyshire where the Rivers Sett and Goyt meet. Gritstone gorges cut through the centre of town, and the riverside area around them is known as the Torrs, or the Park under the Town. The town sits between Manchester and the Peak District and is reached by the A6 trunk road and by two railway stations, New Mills Central and New Mills Newtown. It is not usually a destination on its own, but it makes a reasonable stop of an hour or two for travellers passing between the two.
The town is compact enough to cover on foot, with Market Street and Union Road holding the main shops. Half Man Half Biscuit described it as "No frills, handy for the hills".

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
- Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
- Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
- United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
- United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
- United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.
Entry rules depend on your passport. Full visa guide

Getting around
The centre is small enough to walk. Two stations: New Mills Central (trains from Manchester Piccadilly about 30 min, Sheffield about 55 min) and New Mills Newtown (Manchester Piccadilly and Buxton about 26 min). They are about ¾ mile apart by road; allow at least 20 minutes on foot between them, or use the more direct path via Wirksmoor Road and the footpath past Torr Vale Mill. Town bus 389 serves the town; route 60 runs Hayfield–New Mills–Macclesfield, not a town-centre service, so check where it stops (check timetables).

Watch out
Safety
- The Torrs walk has one steep descent and ascent; paths are muddy after rain and slippery in winter.
- New Mills Newtown is on the A6, not at the central bus station: the 199 Skyline stops on the road, so check where you get off.
- Some bus services have no evening or Sunday runs: check the last bus before you rely on it.
- Mobile coverage is 4G and patchy on O2; 5G has not reached the area, so download maps and tickets first.
