One night covers the town-centre museums and the Plaza; use it as a cheaper base for Manchester Airport, 15 min by bus 199.

Stockport is a mill town 10 min by train from Manchester Piccadilly, on the West Coast Main Line, so many London and Birmingham trains stop here before Manchester. Its draw is a compact cluster of council museums (Air Raid Shelters, Staircase House, Hat Works, Bramall Hall), the restored 1930s Plaza cinema and a strong pub and brewery scene. Most visitors see the centre in a day and use it as a base for the airport or the Peak District edge at Marple and Lyme Park.

About Stockport

Stockport is a town in the south east of Greater Manchester, historically part of Cheshire. It lies where the rivers Tame and Goyt meet to form the Mersey, and it sits on the Manchester spur of the West Coast Main Line, ten minutes by train from Manchester Piccadilly. The town is known for its textile past, its council museums and a strong pub and brewery scene.

Stockport was never a port, since the rivers cannot be navigated; the name likely refers to a market place. The rivers powered waterwheels for textile mills, and the town became industrial from the 18th century. Its trade was silk, particularly for hat-making, which lasted into the 20th century. In 2011 the town had 137,000 residents.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Entry rules depend on your passport. Full visa guide

What is worth your time in Stockport.

  • Hat Works — A museum in Wellington Mill covering the local hat-making industry, with headwear from many centuries and countries.
  • Air Raid Shelters — Sandstone tunnels beneath the town centre, cut during World War II to shelter 6500 people, with one section open as a museum.
  • Staircase House — A restored house from the 15th century whose centrepiece is an unusual Jacobean newel cage staircase.
  • Stockport Town Hall — An Edwardian building of white Portland stone from 1904–08 by Sir Alfred Brumwell Thomas, with an Italianate entrance hall and a Wurlitzer organ.
  • Bramall Hall — A timber-framed mansion from the 14th century, mostly Tudor with Victorian changes, set in free parkland.

Do

  • Buy a combi-ticket for the council's four museums: Air Raid Shelters, Staircase House, Bramall Hall and a guided tour of Hat Works.
  • Walk the loop from Marple along the canal aqueduct over the River Goyt, returning via Brabyn's Park and the riverside.
  • Cycle the Middlewood Way, an old railway track converted into a path half a mile west of Marple.
  • Catch one of the monthly Monday noon organ concerts at Stockport Town Hall.

Specialities of this place.

  • Ring O' Bells — A pub at the canal junction in Marple, among the village's small hotels, eating places and pubs.
  • Abney Café — A café in the centre of Abney Park in Cheadle.
  • Ashlea Pub — A pub just outside Abney Park, in its southwest corner.

Customs

  • The town's name probably means "market place", and despite the name it has never been a port because the rivers are not navigable.
  • Stockport's textile trade was silk rather than the cotton of Lancashire towns, centred on hat-making.
  • Agatha Christie often stayed at Abney Hall, where her sister married into the owner's family; she named Miss Marple for the village after a railway delay there.

Events

Watch out

Safety

A normal Greater Manchester town. Use the usual UK city-centre caution after dark, keep valuables out of sight in crowds, and stick to lit, busy streets. Emergency 999 or 112; NHS 111; police non-urgent 101.
  • The four council museums are closed Mondays; Air Raid Shelters and Staircase House open from 13:00 on weekdays, 11:00 at weekends.
  • Hat Works has had partial closures for machine-gallery work: check before you go.
  • Stockport Town Hall is normally only open for events or pre-booked group tours of 15+; the entrance hall is usually walk-in.
  • A6 through town is congested at school-run times; the train beats the bus into Manchester at peak.
  • Match days at Edgeley Park (10,800 all-seated) fill the pubs and trains around the station.
