Give Whitstable one night, two at most: a harbour-and-oyster half-day plus the low-tide Street walk. Day-trippers from London see the same town in six hours.

Whitstable is a small north Kent coast town, about 80 minutes by train from London Victoria, known for oysters, a working harbour and a pebble beach. Most visitors come for a day; one night lets you eat dinner and catch the tide right at the Street. It pairs naturally with Canterbury, 30 minutes by bus.

About Whitstable

Whitstable sits on the north Kent coast in southeast England, part of the Canterbury district. In 2011 its communities, stretching from Seasalter through to Herne Bay, held 32,100 residents. Oysters made the town's name, and during the 18th and 19th centuries it developed as a fishing port, harbour and seaside resort.

Trains from London Victoria reach Whitstable in 80 minutes, and the station lies a quarter mile east of the High Street. A pebble beach with groins and a concrete path runs along most of the seafront, while the working harbour and fish market operate daily. The town is a base for coast walks east towards Herne Bay and for the Crab & Winkle Way to Canterbury.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Entry rules depend on your passport. Full visa guide

  • The Street — A shingle spit that runs half a mile out from Tankerton beach at low tide, at right angles to the shore, so walkers should watch for the tide flooding behind them.
  • Harbour and fish market — The working quayside is active every day from 8AM to 5PM.
  • Whitstable Castle — A mansion from 1790 with grounds, a play area and the Orangery Tearoom; the building itself is used for events rather than sightseeing.
  • Whitstable Museum and Gallery — Housed in an 18th-century building, it covers local history, seafaring and the actor Peter Cushing, with adult entry at £3.
  • Reculver Country Park — A grassy cliff-top Site of Special Scientific Interest two miles east of Herne Bay, where the towers of the ruined St Mary church stand beside a Roman fort.

Do

  • Walk the pebble beach and its concrete promenade path.
  • Take a boat trip from the harbour, which may pass the seals' sandbanks, the wind farms or the Maunsell forts.
  • Cycle or walk the 7.6-mile Crab & Winkle Way between Canterbury and Whitstable.

Specialities of this place.

  • Oysters — The town is known for them, and Wheeler's Oyster Bar on High Street has served them for a long time.

  • The Lobster Shack — A seafood cafe on East Quay, open daily from 11AM to 9PM.
  • Pearson's Arms — A gastropub on Horsebridge Road with bar food downstairs and a restaurant upstairs.

  • The actor Peter Cushing, who lived at Seaway Cottage on the seafront from 1959, is commemorated by a blue plaque and remembered in the local museum.
  • The town has many craft shops and artists' studios alongside small independent shops.
  • The Old Neptune pub stands on the beach on wooden piles; the original was washed away in 1897 and rebuilt from the scattered timber.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime small town; the real risks are the fast-rising tide at the Street, uneven pebbles and groins on the beach, and dark unlit stretches of the coast path after sunset.
  • The Street floods behind you as the tide comes in: check the tide table and never let it cut you off.
  • Parking in town is difficult; use the station or seafront car parks and walk.
  • Seafront restaurants and oyster bars run short seasonal hours and close early out of summer: book or check before you travel.
  • Herne Windmill has been closed for restoration: check before walking out to it.
